went musseling this morning with mark and his 2 bairns got some canny mussel with the bigger one covered in barnacles, which gave me loads of scrapes and a few canny cuts on fingers and afew ripped nails , however this big bucket of mussell is waitin to be shelled when i get back home, dont relish the prospect of shelling them as fingers are really sore off the barnacles might teach me to take gloves next time lol

[QUOTE=dabcatcher;740506]have fun.... once you get into a method it gets easier.
must get myself out and start freezing some down before it gets cold.
doing them yourself means you know that they wernt opened with hot water.[/QUOTE
gonna try a few methods
1, conventional way with a knife but very slow on most of them the way i like the mussels stay vibrant orange and not pastey looking
2, then a dozen a quick dip in ho****er then straight into cold 3,. and a dozen left in fresh water for a few hours
4, a dozen in freezer for a hour or 2
then compare them

I don't mind shucking mussels! I always get a big bucketful to keep frozen for the winter and I quite enjoy sitting out in the garden with a beer or ten, just doing my mussels. It is relaxing and therapeutic I think. I use an old Bait knife ground down to make a rounded end. Much easier than a pointed knife.

i just live 5 minutes walk from the blyth beds so just go get mine fresh when i need them so no need 2 shell bucketfulls & freeze, all i use is a t-spoon that i have grinded a sharp edge to 1 side of the handle 2 open the mussel & grinded an edge on 1 side of the spoon 2 scoop out the mussel, much quicker.
i know a few lads wayback that used 2 keep mussel in a bucket of sea or river water & add oats 2 the water & the mussel would fillter the water through & double in size 2 bursting point.
the more u do it m8 the faster u will get.
