  • Rod Characteristics

As a real newcomer to shore fishing I see all these rods for sale on here and haven't got a scooby what they fish like!
Would be great if there were a page or a thread on here with a decent list of modern rods and their size/casting weight/casting style/ground use etc.
I'm never going to have a rod for every occassion, maybe 1 rod to do most work then a lighter rod for river fishing but I'd like to own a decent all rounder that wouldn't look out of place on a beach at the pier or on the rocks.
Does such a list exist or is like anything else, you just learn over the years?
    Cheers.
    Michael.

Just ask for help mate get many mixed reviews and filter them down, there is a lot of rods out there that will be a nice all rounder it depends, what size lead and bait you will cast, do you fish more beaches or more rough ground, and the amount you have spend.

2nd hand around the £150 mark and yes it's more for beaches but probably leaning to a mixed ground rod, as I say I ideally want an all rounder with good bite detection but can throw a 5 or 6oz lead a fair chuck.
I'd think the price I want to pay probably puts Zippys out of the equation but I've always admired the look and sound of Century Rods.
Currently I have a pair of TFG Deltas which have served me well so far and I just bought an AFAW 2-5oz rod for flattie bashing so I'm covered but with all of the rods currently selling at what I'd think are attractive prices i wouldn't mind upgrading the heavier rods.
      Cheers.
      Michael.

If it was me and it's just my opinion I would look towards the afaw tourney rock, or the very underrated century kompresser s which is the same as the ss but has a softer butt that the ss which I find numb, wr300 has excellent bite detection but a very stiff butt,

Might be worth you looking at a century tip tornado sport as well. My favourite rod for piers and beaches. I only use my komp SS off the cliffs and rough ground.
                All the gear, no idea.

Tip tornado sport or kompressor sport will deal with most situations around here buddy as already mentioned above. If you google 'century sea rods' and just go through century's descriptions you should find exactly what your after.

Mk1 TT Sport, brilliant all round rod still regret selling mine.

Don't get the Mk2 with the metal band, a completely different animal. Carbon Metal Express another good all round rod from Century, should pick a good one up for under £140 2nd hand; bit longer at 14' and a tad heavy but nice to fish and cast with.

Can't speak for other makes as I've only used Century or Zziplex for the last 20 odd years but there's not much wrong with the AFAW rods or some of the Daiwas (or Conoflex for that matter)

Got to agree with stewart, good advice.
Got an afaw tourney rock myself n I love e'm,very nice sweet tip(great bite detection)can sling a lead n bait too, very slim but powerfull, look more like a match rod than a rock rod at first glance. Also the cme's very versatile, but not a patch on the tourney imo(I have both)the afaw's imo just a "nicer"rod to use, better bite detection, better feeling
