  • Shore fishing - Isle of Wight

Anybody on this site got any knowledge of shore fishing around Isle of Wight. Got a weeks holiday at Yarmouth coming up and probably will get out for a couple of early morning sessions before family gets up. Just wondering what's best gear to take for this time of year, spinning, heavy rock gear or clean beaches.

I've looked on other forums so have a bit of an idea, but could do with a bit more local
    Knowledge/experiences

    Cheers in advance

Lots of shingle beach fishing, this time of year you should be targetting Sole (close in, small hooks, keep light discipline) as well as Smoothhound (Solent coast) and Bass (all over). Don't be afraid to drop a big fresh Mackerel bait in very close for the chance of a good fish. You will also pick up Red Mullett, Pouting, Poor Cod etc especially on night tides.

Plenty of Mackerel and Wrasse spinning a Dexter wedge.

Some of the marks involve a bit of a yomp and a nasty climb but these can be the most worthwhile to fish (though I wouldn't try to fish these alone). Been a few years since I fished there and only really fished the beaches so can't comment on rock fishing I'm afraid

Love the place.. try to get most years. Last time I was there, the pier at Yarmouth was fishing well for bass (small charge). Only drawback then was the weed which was a bit of a chew. Freshwater bay was a nice spot to park the family, and sling a line in. Would move to the island for the fishing alone. Theres loads of good spots. There is an I.o.w. fishing forum which you should find useful.

          Yarmouth is on I.O.W.
