  • Rough ground reel advice

    Alright lads.
Fished the doctors house on Saturday and lost a cracking fish in the kelp about 15-20 ft in front of me after dragging it about 70-80 yards through loads of kelp on the way in. Using a slosh 30 and icon ultra power, I felt the reels winching power was enough to handle it but with a better retrieve rate I MIGHT have got the fish in all the way. What rough ground reels do you guys use? Is the 30 ok and do I just needs some arm workouts? lol. Thanks

As far as sheer winching power goes, I have never used anything that feels more powerful in that respect as a Surfblaster 8000

I think the slosh 30 is fine
Iv list a few in my time around that area
& always think back on what could I have done? Afterwards!
As long as you keep a steady retrieve & keep the fish from heading to the kelp for protection, you should manage ok
There's a lot of good fish about all over that area.
I was on a boat on Sunday & had a good few fish around the 6lb mark to be fair just out of casting range but nice to see there still around

Slosh 30 has a ratio of 6.1:1 which is pretty quick. It also comes standard with a conversion power handle which will speed up the retrieve. The reels are pretty much bomb proof if you look after them. Same as other reels. I own the 20 and 30 and can't fault them. I also have a fathom 15 which retrieves 28" of line per spool revolution but not sure of ratio. I'd just wind a little quicker

Slosh 30s are fine but I have found when fishing kelp 20lb mono 80lb shocker on a penn trq works the best, but on a budget fathom 15 would do the same.

Like mentioned above, great reels that have stood the test of timegot the 20 n 30 too myself, cracking reels for the dough. For the real brutal fishing prefer my bg 30 but like pig hunter say's the, trq's r real animals),
Just keep there head up n don't stop winding till u have landed that pig,but then again it's why they call it fishing n not catching.

I used to use a slosh 30 for rough ground but went and bought a shimano spheros 14000 last year and loaded it with 70lb braid and iv found it to be a tough reliable handle anything reel which soon gets your gear lifted off the bottom and skimming across the surface or dragging in whatever's on the end usually a load of kelp !

Thanks lads. I like the reel for the rough stuff, I was just putting the question out there to see what people use. I done everything I could to land it, kept the rod tip straight up and reeled in like mad. It got in the kelp twice on the way in but I managed to bully it through but third time unlucky it was and it got in and held firm. Oh well, next time!! lol

Could just be using a Weaker line for you rotten bottom.

                              .

Was using 3/0 pulley rig. Had 60lb mainline with 30lb hook length, rotten bottom with 12lb weak line. Me slosh 30 has 35lb F1 straight through.
