The sloshes are fine, although these days all I use are Saltists...I fish the Doctor's House area quite a lot, particularly the little island just to the north of the Kern, next to the big gulley. I use a 20 size reel loaded with 0.40mm line (either 18lb Daiwa Tournament or Sufix Tritanium 24lb I think) 40 or 50lb hook-lengths on a clip-down paternoster rig with a 15lb rotten bottom - a good chuck puts you onto pretty clean ground, but there's a nasty overhanging ledge about 30-60 yds out (depending where you fish and the state of the tide). This is where the trouble starts as it's loaded with kelp & the weed continues all the way to your feet. If you get it successfully over the ledge just do your best to keep a fish coming...if you feel it about to get hung up just try and pull it through - if you pause at all you give the fish a chance to really wrap you up in the kelp.

The main thing is though - fishing that kind of ground, if you do get a really good fish on I'd say the odds of losing it are better than landing it...it's the nature of fishing really rough ground (not like gliding them up a beach where you can "play" a fish or hauling it to some steps on a pier) so odds are you did nothing wrong, just bad luck!

Aye, mind you some beaches have problems of their own...severe surging backwash being one example - I've seen a lot of fish lost by lads with over-stiff rods just trying to drag them through. On the clean ground I like quite a soft-tipped rod and be prepared to run backwards or forwards with the surges, keeping the pressure on but not so much that the fish pulls the hook - just got to time it right and work them through!

Used Slosh30 for 15 years now and always found them reliable and they just keep going.. They're proven rough ground reels, that said you lose fish while fishing in the hard stuff! Thats just the way it is.. I wouldnt say that another reel would give you more of a chance.. But of course thats imo..

Maybe but nowhere near as much as a torque 100. Used my saltist on the boat the other week and could feel the gears grinding not good. No such problems on the torque. Fish in the 3-6lb mark can be wound straight up with a constant retrieve and no need for pumping.

I think they retail at 700/800 note's very good engineering to these reels internals
