It's 25 years since I last fished the Open; can't remember the numbers from that year but I do remember we moved the weigh in from The Knack to the leisure centre because of the entry the year before (this was in the days of Clifford House, way before the building of the new HQ).Originally posted by Deans View Postflat seas all week.

1988 I do remember well; it was the year BBC Newcastle did a programme focussed on the Open. It was part of their "Peculiar Obsession" series and was called "Jim and Alex and Chris and Ken" (Dobie, Harvey, Stringer and Robinson) and followed our four (and others) through the day of the comp. Used to have a copy on VHS (now sadly lost); the entry that year was about 1300 and the footage shows the beaches and piers with anglers literally shoulder to shoulder all the way along the coast.
Sadly I think the days of 1000 plus entries (the record entry for the Seaham Open was 2002 anglers IIRC) are long gone, but for the first time since I moved away after 1989 I'm going to have a go...CLIP IT AND WHACK ITComment

Might sound like a daft question but this will be my first proper comp, when people are on about getting to their favourite mark early sunday morning...whats stopping them fishing before the match starts ? will there be stewards everywhere ?
