It is fishing related coz I want one for finding the more obscure marks that pop up every now and again...

What good makes are there? Are the ones for £100 or less cr*p or do they serve the purpose just as well?

    Any help/info greatly appreciated

cheers very very good prices on that site

What about handheld GPSs? Are they all about the same?

I guess increased cost is usually to do with more added extras etc?

              or...

              buy an iPhone

google maps with gps built in, or if you really want it you can download tomtom to run on an iphone, or, as I've done on mine, you can use a mac app called gpsNavX and run all the admiralty charts on it as well, or all 3 at the same time if you want to

                    yup.

they've just changed the pricing. you used to have to buy the phone and have a contract, but you can get them free with a contract from 11th July when the new 3g ones come out. they also have cheaper contracts as well now but you've got to chuck £99 quid in for the phone. One nice touch is the fact they recognise a lot of people will have paid £269 for there iPhone last year, so they are giving the new 3g ones away free to all existing users, my kids are currently fighting over who gets my old one!

the one thing with the contract that makes them different from all the others is internet bandwidth - its free and unlimited, use the net as much as you want from the phone and it costs absolutely nowt. I used to rack up huge bills for data with my old contracts. the phone will automatically pick up the best connection wherever you are - WiFi via the cloud network(access included in the contract) or any other known network, 3g, edge or gprs

As a device they still have a few teeny limitations compared to some of the other new smart phones, but when you use one, they are light years ahead IMHO and the few things they don't do don't matter.
