My Dad (aka growler) had a nice one off Seaham North Pier a few years back.. Although only one ive seen caught up here.. Was caught in darkness, not sure if it has any bearing though.. Persistance is the key I reckon..

Sole have very small mouths. I use size 4 or 6 hooks. Caught couple on chesil beach 2 yrs ago. Up here we think size 1 is small but they are way too big for sole, so that, s why so few are caught here . 1 inch of black lug was the bait

I always used to make my Sole rigs with size 4 Kamasan B940M but I know a few lads who would go down as small as 6. Very short snoods, short casts and keep the rod low in the tripod; keep lights off the water. That said don't skimp on the bait; Solent it was ragworm but even on a tiny hook a decent bait up the snood was used...



I'm heading south again in mid-August, might be a bit early but Sole are on the list to target as well as late Hounds, Bream and hopefully a Golden Grey Mullet

Haha that's the on mate. took mine on 4/0 up and over rig

Last Sole I caught was in October 2009 off Pagham beach in Sussex. A decent SW sea was running and it took a 4/0 Varivas Big Mouth Extra loaded with two runnydown and a chunk of squid to tip off intended for cod

But you wouldn't use 4/0s with the intention of catching sole . It's the surprise , that's the buzz .I'll stick to size 4s for sole and keep 4/0 for cod . Nice to see you back Stewart

Did you cook it fresh? Sole are like good beef - they need a bit of time to "hang" to get the best flavour - minimum 48 hours in the fridge for Sole to be at its best for eating I'd say

Sole are rated as a very nice eating fish by most.... You sure it wasn't a flounder?

I left mine for 2/3 days in the fridge before eating and it was beautiful boys

I caught one off Seaham Pier last summer. Over 1.5lb cleaned. Left it in the fridge for a couple of days, wrapped it in pancetta roasted it. Deeelish. Caught it on a three hook flapper size 1 Sakuma rag and Mackey.

Lovely fish. And that's the main reason I'm gutted the pier is going to be closed soon; I don't give a tinsel toss about the Mackerel but I was looking forward to putting some late summer evening hours in in search of Sole down there

ive caught them on Tynemouth long sands during settled conditions, warm eveings on lugworm and Tynemouth peir fishing inside the haven on ragworm , people don't catch them as they do not target them , again small hooks and short hook trace try metal booms as they use to hammer them down on the Suffolk coast line using metal booms jim ps I had them around aug to sept
