  • Shields Pier

So with the reports that the mackerel are about have the piers started to get busy yet? Was thinking about heading down early saturday morning (6:30ish) to shields pier to chuck a few lures about. Was hoping there were a few fish about so I can have some sport on a light rod using spoons, wedges etc, while still not enough about so that the piers are shoulder to shoulder.

To summarise... I want a few fish, not loads and want it to be fairly quiet anyone reckon I have a chance?

If your looking for a quiet peaceful fishing session on ssp
I think you'll have more chance of dinner with elvis Presley whilst sitting next to John lennon

yeah, that's what I was thinking - just wondered what time it all starts to get busy - I take it a 6:30am start is too late,

Its either that or head over to St. Mary's and chuck a few lures about up there. Might be a better bet thinking about it, even though I will have less of a chance catching anything for the table

personally id be on there at first light. always the best time. or even better waiting for it to get light. the tides this weekend will be perfect for it.

you wouldnt believe the amount of times weve had fantastic sessions at first light then by 6.30 when the sleepy heads turn up the fish are going off.

Probably showing our ages here like - I remember waiting for the local offy in peterlee to open to buy some cigarettes on a sunday because everywhere else was closed! and probably to grab a few cans of lager as well knowing what I was like when I was younger - hell, to think of it if I was into fishing back then I would probably be one of the lager swilling numptys on the pier!

8-9am tends to be when shields fills up. Get yourself down for 5, fish a couple of hours and bugger off for a bacon sarnie!!

Yer a few mackerel starting to show now, we hit a shoal of them only 1mile from the pier ends on Monday. A few winter bait fisherman taken up space and leaving lug worm papers etc on the pier but apart from that its worth a shot for a few macky n coalie
