After talking and going out fishin with a few of you it seem`s depression
has hit some of you as cod season has finished,some even hinting at packing up for the summer.Surely that can`t be it until next year,I`ve only just got in to it and shelled out a small fortune on tackle,there must be more,or be I have to resign myself to being sociable to the family?

The weather is playing a big part at the minute mate - if this was "Cod Season" we'd all be out there coz the weather and the sea is perfect...however there's nowt about except coalies and small fry...and fishing light for small stuff in the wind and rain is not my idea of fun

Personally I'm waiting for the milder weather and calmer nights to fish the beaches for Flatties or go Rock hopping for Wrasse etc

...plus the cr*p weather is playing havoc with the Boats...as there should have ordinarily been a glut of reports by now...

Patience I think is the key...

When i was younger I used to fish 3-4 times a week every week, all year. As I got older I became obsessed with fishing for cod. Now its my one true angling passion and nothing else comes close. Mackerel fishing on the pier with the sun in your face is quite enjoyable and I'm sure you'll enjoy that Mark. I also used to fish for eels on warm summer evenings and have even taken double figure bags of cod in the summer on peeler(in daylight) from the North pier at Seaham. Again enjoyable but just not the same as freezing your nuts off in -5 conditions waiting for a bite that could be 'the one' that leads to a cod of a life time. I normally resume cod fishing in October, only 6 months to go lol

Loads of fish, difference is the sizes and the techniques plus you're looking less at a meal and more at a bit of fun doing a species hunt, usually on much lighter gear.

I'll still be going out and fishing for whatever is there bud, don't believe that all the cod are gone, they are just harder to catch. You need to get into the kelp over the summer for the red cod!! I've witnessed loads of good cod getting caught in the summer. 1 lad i know on here prob catches more in the summer than the winter and gets some very good bags of fish. Plus a few of us will be going on day trips prob once or twice a month to Mull of Galloway and St abbs if you fancy it.

Barney i thought the same as you last year until i went up to my local resevoir at Derwent. Its only about 4 miles away. I was watching people fishing for trout. You could ledger using earth worm or power bait. Float fish or fly fish.
I have tried them all but enjoy the fly fishing best. It is an active way of fishing and a challenge.
I muddled my way through last season and this is my second. I am a hundred times better but still a real amateur. The down side is you pay for a licence £25 per year and it costs £20 a day to fish.
But i don,t smoke and have give up drinking for a while so to me its worth it.
I have also got more into boat fishing again this is seasonal and an excellent way of getting out in the summer. Its not cheap at £30-£40 a trip. But again i think its money well spent.
And if its sea fishing you can always try for Bass. I,m down tomorrow at Hartlepool and will probs chuck my gear in the motor. If there is a canny surf i,ll but some ragworm and have a chuck.
The Macky will soon be here and thats good sport.

I wont stop for the summer,but am enjoying your replies,trips to galloway
and St Abbs sound good as does the occasional boat trip(really havent got a clue).Cheers lads keep the replies coming.
