  • Left Hand Vs Right Hand

Sounds like an odd question but it struck me when I recently swapped my slosh for my fixed spool during a session...I went from reeling in right handed with the multi to reeling in left handed with the F/S

It felt wrong - but why should it? Most light fishing work (for right handers) is done with the rod in the right hand and the reeling done with the left, yet with a multi on a beachcaster it's the other way round...

Most F/S have the capability of changing the handle so that it's left or right sided...have just done this with one of my reels and put it on a rod to "feel" how it felt...this also felt wrong - a total paradox...why is this?

Has anyone else tried fishing with a F/S the "wrong" way round?

Rex Hunt used to spout off about it every now and again - it wasn't until I tried it that saw what he meant...

I fished a few times with an old man that used to turn his rod the other way(reel on top) when using a fixed spool. Looked realy odd as he would have it set low down on the rod aswell. He had to wind in backwards, how he managed i never knew but he would often have his rod and reel set up like it.

it only feels wrong cause its not the "norm" of what your doing but what you'll probs find is that your main hand is stronger (usualy right) but when you use your left hand you'll find it weeker but smoother, a more consistant reel turning speed as opposed to the stronger burst/slower/burst

The only time i use a f/s is on my spinning rod with left hand wind, which gives more control playing a fish with the rod in the right.

when the wife goes fishing (once a year!) she has a f/s right hand wind,on a beach-rod and when i help out it feel strange as hell...being a multiplyer-man, it feels strange enough having the eyes of long beach-rod pointing down when one is used to having them upover.

The only difference in using yr right to reel in with a fixed spool is after the cast. As u would normally use yr right hand (dominent) on the spool after u've cast out u then would swap yr hands over when to click the bail arm over and wind in. I've used both ways and now have coverted myself to reel in L/H 4 this reason.

I always use a multi with my r/hand to wind but a fixed winding with my left, seems more natural and comfortable for some reason...

after not fishing for 15 years and buying a new rod this weekend. i lasted 3 casts before swapping the handle over on my fixed spool so i could reel in with my right hand ,the other way felt like when you try to write with your other hand ,weird
