Is braid any good for casting from the beach. I'm looking for a low diameter quality line as to fill my Mag 525 Xtra. I'm going to give Horden a try tomorrow night from 6pm. If I put 30lb line on there isn't enough line on the spool for casting.

I have never tried it but i know someone who has, he said it was bad!
and it was hard to tie good knots with aswell. (here i go again)
you could try putting low diameter braid as backing line then top off with a 100m of mono-line. or some thing like that.

A mate of mine has used it for years on a fixed spool from the beach and off the rocks to good effect. I was reading Mchardy's catalogue the other night and to quote them "Braid comes into it's own when used on a multiplier, use a minimum of 20lb braid" but haven't had any experience myself.
I'm told some braids are stiffer than others and they are better for multipliers but I'd be getting some of the cheaper stuff from the likes of tackle bargains.

I put braid on a rocket, had one cast, the braid dug into the spool under the pressure of the cast and the lot was ruined. I've heard since that you can get away with it if on the last few winds you get the line going across the spool on more of an angle, apparently it stops it digging in, (the theory seems fine) never tried it though, £15 for one cast was enough for me!!
If you want distance get a good quality mono about 15lb and use a shock leader, only trouble with this is you can only use it over clean ground otherwise you loss the lot. If you need it for rough ground work (at distance) and you want heavy line straight through then I'm affraid there's only one thing for it, a bigger reel. Before you judge a man, walk a mile in his shoes. After that who cares?... He's a mile away and you've got his shoes!

when doing any kind of power casting the braid can cut itself into the braid below, due to the high speed of the reels revolutions.
Pulling free from snags with braid is dodgy to,apart from the possibility of it cutting through the braid below it on the spool when trying to pull free,it also has a tendency to bury itself in the layers of braid below, and it burys itself very deeply and tightly.
Casting wise a F/S is the best option for braid
MINT for boat fishing tho as it dont stretch

use braid on a fixed spool only and you won,t have any problems as soon a s you put it on a multiplier you come up with all sorts of complications, ,you don,t want a birds nest with braid ,i,ve had it ,total nightmare plus there,s no give in it so if you are power casting and you get a loop around the reel when you are in the middle of a cast and it catches your thumb it will bite in to the bone, if your reel cant hold enough mono line try a penn535 you can get loads of line on them.

did you lads that tried braid use a shock leader ??, if not then theres your problem when power casting and it digging in, i use an abu 5500 with 20lb braid but with a 60lb shock on, never had a problem, i also use a shimano with 50lb braid, same again a mono shock

Thanks for all the replys looks like I'd better stick with mono. I was down Horden on Friday Night my mate got a cod about 1 1/2 pound, I got a good whitey about 1 1/4 and my brother got a couple of whiteys. Most of the time I fish in mixed ground so I was looking for a Quality line to do both so any ideas.

I have just gone back to using TRILENE sensation. .38mm (12KG) on a abu 6500 c3ct."rocket". i fish only rough ground.after a lot of snags i have never lost any gear yet accept hooks tied on a weaker trace line. iam surprized how strong it is!.
