  • New rod and reel

I am at present thinking about replacing my cheapo gear with better quality tackle, I`ve got a budget of about £300 ish and am looking to long cast from rocky beaches or fish piers,so a bit of an all rounder combo is needed. At the minute I`m looking at a Century ccc and a Penn 525 mag xtra. Is this a good choice or not?

personal choice mate, but I'd go up a reel size, 535 or slosh30

Barney, i think you may struggle to get a C3 plus a penn 525 mag extra for £300.
You would definately get the rod plus a slosh 30 for £300.
If people think you are an idiot, why speak and remove all doubt !

Aw man, this is music to my ears!!

I'm ultra new to shore fishing and the first reel I bought was a Slosh 30 for £25 off ebay, had no idea they were that good

The rod I got for £8 is a Penn Extreme Noreaster 14 foot, any info on that would be hugely appreciated!

That's an absolute bargain. It's a very good rough ground rod, and surprisingly sensitive for smaller bites.

                  hey mate
i just baught a century formula and a mag 525 i paid £80 for the pair, so you should have no problem with £300 mate
The rod was £30 and £50 for the real
both in mint condition, rod has a few scraches on it but not in to the carbon or anything like.
if i wer u i would go for the century carbon metal for what your wanting, theres one going on the for sale for £70
hope ya get what ya want
                  cheers

525 and 30 are too different reels. The 30 is easier to live with and casts v well but is more designed for heavier work with 25lb line plus. The 525 is alot of people's favourites for lighter work e.g. 20lb but can be more difficult to tame if your'e not used to multipliers. Personally, I would buy them both. Once you get into fishing a bit more you will own about 5 or 6 reels so that you can swap them over if and when you nest or need different types of breaking strain or lenghth of shocky. I generally prefer the 525 over the 6500's because of the retrieve and greater flexibility, although a 6500 with 15lb line can not be beat for distance over a clean beach...
