  • Silloth

I'm a novice shore angler and want to catch a few different species and get about the country a bit. I've seen reports from Silloth so would like some advise.

For the rays what strength mainline and end tackle should I use and are people using braid or mono?
I'd like to go in the next week or two so are there any times to avoid due to tides or whatever and is it best over high or low water etc etc.

Any advise would be great, sorry if its been asked for before.
    Species 2012.
    Uk. Codling,whiting,

    Lanzarote. Scorpionfish,damselfish,red grouper,dusky grouper,red bream,white bream,red snapper,vermillion snapper,ornate wrasse,

Silloth the prom where the rays are coming from is best over high water, three up two back over high water.Braid or nylon up to the individuals own preference what you want to use.Standard beach rod and reel set up will do.Main lines 15-18lb with leader, clipped down rigs,up and overs and drop down pennel pulleys with long 40/50lb hook snoods 2/0 hooks pennelled for rays further out or distance, and a two hook pompey loop rig with strong size 1s hooks do for mixed species, dogs, flats , and rays if your carefull.Im sure you will get more variations on this and good advice from others these rigs worked for me on rays to 50lb elsewhere.

There's a lot of fishing marks all over that area & in my opinion better than silloth

Beach at maryport is good for flatties & occasional rays & bass also pier worth a try

Harrington beach does well with some good bass catches if the sea is right

Then all over the colvend/balcary/rascarrel area

Then kirkudbright area will give a lot of species

So can most species be caught in the daytime or is it better at night?

What weight lead should I be using and should it be plain or gripper.

you will need gripper leads at Silloth, as the tidal current is very strong on any biggish tides. in fact on spring tides you will struggle to hold bottom at all at times.

Yeah I would appreciate some advice on this, was thinking of fishing either Silloth or Holderness coast this weekend, Sunday/ Monday due to the tides where would I be better trying?

                        Thanks
