        BYELAW XXII
PERMIT TO FISH FOR LOBSTER, CRAB, VELVET CRAB AND WHELK
1 This Byelaw applies to all of the North Eastern Sea Fisheries Committee District.
2 No person shall fish for or take any of the following specified kinds of sea fish: Lobster (Homarus gammarus), Crab (Cancer pagurus), Velvet Crab (Liocarcinus puber), or Whelk (Buccinum undatum), within the area of the North Eastern Sea Fisheries Committee District except under a specified permit issued by the Committee and signed by the Clerk of the Committee and in accordance with the following conditions:-

I think this is the permit your talking about

Notice the type of crab (Cancer pegurus) thats a eddie to me and you
Edible crab - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

What we would be looking for is shore crab (Carcinus maenas)
Carcinus maenas - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Therefore is not covered by that bylaw
So why did the official ask to see a permit when the said "mate" was collecting "bait" ?
And why issue permits to people who are for want of a better phrase ,beachcombing. Also they give you the option of having Crabpot tags OR not having Crabpot tags.
Isn't anything straight forward , like yes you can or no you can't.

Looks to me as though it's just for edible and velvet crabs and the guy that was stopped came up against a jobsworth. According to another of the byelaws it's illegal full stop to use edible crabs as bait.
Who knew that there was a minimum size for mussels???? 5cm apparently.

Well peeps , thanks for your opinions , what started as a tongue in cheek comment soon spiraled out of hand . But what I said about a mate getting stopped , true, and the other stuff about the permit and bye laws , true, cos I quoted it from the copy "they" sent with "The Permit" . I'm gonna look at this again.
Permit your arse Mr Dunn , which Committee do we apply to for that

I dont know why they stopped him mate.

I do think its straight forward though. You need a permint to collect Cancer pagurus, AKA Edible Crabs, but not for Carcinus maenas, AKA Shore Crabs.

Mind you we could just email NESF and ask them and save all the hassel

it is straight-forward...the byelaw only relates to lobsters and the brown crab...an overzealous (or misinformed?) official methinks...
