Haha, I thought the lunar cycle/abnormal algae was the excuse the commercials give for the lack of cod!

They are bound to say that aren't they. Nowt to do with the millions of tons they catch is it?

Got a couple of Pollock last year spinning. Next to those huge rocks (boulders) on the right hand side on the way up the pier.

Tasted absolutely spot on as well.

Gave the beach a go for mackerel last year, was just as good as the pier and had a fun day.
Need to have a decent chuck and was no chance of pollock either at Horden but enjoyed it better than a packed pier.

Just sayin might be worth trying your beach if you want to avoid the piers

Does it take them a while (weeks, a month or so?) to venture from the end of the pier, right into the harbour and towards the beach?

a couple of year ago, when it was getting dark, we were chucking just past the breaker's, as soon as it hit the bottom, a quick jerk and they were on.

Just we fished below the gates last year a few times and never caught anything at high tide. Had to walk up to the end of the pier before we caught any.

Nah pretty much every tide mate as David says. Not many people fish there though so its not as obvious they are there though. On a clear day you can sometimes see the maccy chasing sandeels along the side of the pier

Plenty of Mackerel on the open beaches in summer, no need to cast miles it's just a case of knowing where and when to go

Hendon Prom ... No honestly ! I was bait fishing around start of August last year in the middle of Hendon Prom lookin for Plaice and a guy came fishing for Mackerel. I thought he was wasting his time and watched him flogging the water for a while. Well I was not gettin much myself so I put some daylights on and wellied them out as far as I could get and in about 10 minutes I managed to get 1 Macky. Unusual for Hendon and I had to cast far enough to get into the clear water but they were there if you tried hard enough. Great thing about it was that there was a massive prom and only two of us trying to catch Mackerel !

Yeah I've seen them before swimming about chasing sand eels at the side of the pier below the gates as well. Can see the movement on the top of the water.

Just last summer though we blanked every single time unless we walked up the pier to near the end.

The summer before that we had loads of mackerel and didn't even have to go past the gate.
