The sit-on-top (SOT) kayaks are by far the best for fishing from. I have a small SOT which is not kitted out yet for fishing (rod holders etc) but I can use it for, say, spinning in the summer.

For more serious fishing I can recommend speaking to Tim at Frasers Angling in Whitley Bay - they sell fishing kayaks, basic or top spec. Stuff like this Prowler Big Game Angler™ - Perfect for going after the "big one" - Ocean Kayak

    One day soon....

Yep the "big game" certainly is a beast, Ive tried one out and it was stable as anything. A very good choice for our coastline.

What kayak do you have Simon?

Pete, I've only got a small 9 foot Frenzy, made by Ocean Kayak. Not really much cop for fishing from, but good fun all the same. As it doesn't have rod holders I'm going to pick up a small cheap 2-3 foot rod in the near future.

If anyone's buying a kayak for fishing you'd want something larger than a Frenzy....I bought mine before I got into fishing, so that was never a consideration.

I have got the big game prowler for this summer, My first yak and i am looking forward to fishing all over in it, having fished the shoreline for over 30 years this looks like the next exciting step in the fishing obsesion!
I have got most of my gear together now and have started to rig it out. Pete nice to see you on this site as well!

When i was a lad i was in the Boys Brigade at Hartlepool. As part of activities we used to go canoeing from the docks. We used to canoe into the harbour and off the heugh. It was great fun especially riding the waves.
With current health and safety i do not think it would be allowed now.
As to kayak fishing. I have seen guys with canoes down at Hartlepool and Sunderland easily carry them to the water. Have not actually seen anybody kayak fishing to date.
Also saw a guy inflate a canoe once at the Derwent resevoir and have a paddle. Until the boat came from the yachting club and the guys gave him a telling off.

                Mick.

has anyone considered inflatable kayaks? you can pick 'em up for half the cost and they "look" like they could be OK...
