Does anyone now whether or not float fishing in March is any good or not of local piers?, just wondering as i was going to have a go to fill the gap for the wait for the Mackeral.

Theres no reason why not provided you can keep the bait down.
In summer its used for top water species but these are not around in abundance in winter. We have float fished from an anchored boat for thornbacks in deep water (80'), but only on very calm days. Only caught dogfish doing it though.
We have had some sucess for cod on float in Collywell bay keeping just above the kelp. Far easier to do in a boat where you know the exact depth, and perhaps its worth trying one of those pike floats with a sail on a beach with an offshore wind.
Worth a try.

Give it a go mate it might pay you to wait until the end of March,if the sea is flat and the water is clean then you might pick a few Colies up.You could try some of the deep water rock marks for a bit of "trial and error" but expect to lose a few floats.A few years ago my mate watched a lad float fishing at Dunstanburgh Castle during the winter,he caught a codling while he was there,to my mates surpriseCheers Alan...

I think if the conditions are there i.e flat sea and light winds.I would give it a go,or take the lighter rod with you as well as your bottom fishing tackle. If you have the debth of water and are not fishing over too many snaggs.I silenced some crytics fishing in the Tyne down at the Royal Quays a few years back.I was fishing at the mouth of the marriner, close in and i was catching loads of u/s coalies some of these put a brilliant fight up, on a light spinning rod.The chuck it and chance it brigade were silenced when i brought a 3lb codling in followed by a nice plaice and 6 coalies to 2lb.I had the last laugh when they decided to fish with a 13" beachcaster under arm fashion plopping it down the side next to me ROTFL..
