I do both regularly in the summer. In fact I've all but given up bait fishing from the shore through the summer months apart from the odd bit off flattie bashingʎɐqǝ uo pɹɐoqʎǝʞ ɐ ʎnq ı ǝɯıʇ ʇsɐן ǝɥʇ sı sıɥʇ.

Ive all ways fancied fishing turness with the fly, instead of the red gills and stuff like ive done in the past, somtimes when ive been up there theres a old boy who does the fly for the bass and does well too.
Think it would be a good bit of sport, enjoyable and deff different.

There's more than a few uk sal****er fly fishing forums about it's very popular and massive in the US. From the shore I'd imagine the challenges up here would include -
Getting a line out / casting distance
Getting a fly down
Wind (It's hard to fart and cast at the same time )
and mild abuse
I'd imagine just about owt would work as a fly if you're stripping it back
Edit - wow if you type water if turns into stars I think
Edit Aha - I typed the words salt and water together and in the middle of that word is the word **** mad or what"I mock thee not, though I by thee am mockéd.
Thou call'st me madman, but I call thee blockhead"

as far as fly fishing is concerned, don't be conned by thinking you need specialist sal****er gear.
any fly rod 9 foot plus will do, if it can handle heavier lines so much the better.
as for lines, go for cheap as chips fast sinker millend lines usually can be had for less than a fiver. The lines get wrecked quickly, especially if fishing from the rocks, so expensive lines are a waste of beer money IMHO
as for leader, I've tried expensive ultra flourocarbon and tried cheapo mono, can't see that it makes much difference in the sea, so now I use 5lb to 8lb mono
as for flies, don't buy any, make yer own. First time I thought I'd have a bash, I just cut individual hooks from sets of hokkais, mackie feathers, dalylights even, and nipped a little bit of shot on the leader next to the hook to get it down
if you want to progress to 'proper' sal****er flies, they're a doodle to make, even if you've never tied a thing in your life, mainly cos they're big, so not as fiddly, and makeral, pollack and coalies aren't as sniffy about presentation as trout
If your already a fluff chucker, some of the big streamers you'd use on the reservoirs work well
bit limiting for marks round here though, the piers are a bit too high, even if you can put a full 50yard fly line out, by the time its on the water and sank a bit its back at your feet almost. the rocks up at dunstaborough castle/cullernose are probably as good a mark as any in these partsʎɐqǝ uo pɹɐoqʎǝʞ ɐ ʎnq ı ǝɯıʇ ʇsɐן ǝɥʇ sı sıɥʇ.

I'd love to see someone false casting and thwicking a heavy fly line backwards and forwards across the width of Roker Pier, whistling 3" Brass tube flies past people's earholes whilst the air is wick with feathers, 6 oz weights and the sounds of The New Monkey - Come on"I mock thee not, though I by thee am mockéd.
