  • Squid ~vs~ Calamari?

I notice squid is getting a lot of mention as a favoured bait at the moment from the shore, but I'm wondering what people are actually using? I've always bought the rectangular boxes of frozen calamari and never really had much luck with it. However I do recall my dad once buying a large whole fresh squid and slicing that up for bait. Do you guys have any preference between the two?

Depends where i'm fishing mate! if i'm on the beach it would be lug all the way, yellow tails if i can get them. If i'm on the rocks squid and muscel. Rag tipped with mackrel/bluey in the rivers.
Happy to help, Keen to learn!

What has been succesful for me is the frozen calamari squid, but i peel the skin off before baiting it up put it on a 6/0 pully pennel rig and leave the head and tentacles dangling below the hook.

If the crabs arnt about and the fish are there they should find it, can be a waiting game tho.

It's rock marks I'm thinking about, sorry guys should have mentioned that key point! Having a brain fart morning!!! My old Abu 6500 is on it's way out and I'm a bit bored of fishing beaches/piers so I've ordered an sl30sh thinking I'd switch tactics and try spending more time from the local-ish rock marks. We're a fairly busy family so often i've not got the time to go bait digging or when I've got any time it's at short notice and usually after the tackle shops have closed - was thinking squid and mussel in the freezer would be ideal to grab and go...

Check out the freezer dept. in Tesco they do bags of frozen raw squid already with the skin cleaned off and the heads stuffed inside, around £3.50 for half a kilo, keep it in the freezer and just take out what you need for a sesh.....

We used to buy it in boxes frozen from the chinese supermarket. At the time it was only about a quid per box, that was going back 5 or 6 years tho. Found it great for tipping of runnydown in the colder months. Had some great results off it.
