Fathoms are apparently better, I have a fathom 15 and love it. Never used a 525 mag 2 though so I can't compare the 2

I've got a couple of the originals and I've got 3 of the new models.
Haven't had any problems with them, think there good reels.
Same with the 515s got a couple of them, think they cast and reel in ok.

The braking system is a lot better on the mag 2,but the build qlty on the older mods is far superior, got a magged fth 12,mega reels, cast awesome, built very well toosimilar build qlty to the saltist's.my fav reel at the mo for fishing at range,so smooth n easy retreive, love the fth's

I've owned the new mag2 and can't say I like them very much. They don't deem anywhere near as good as the originals. I now have the fathom and feel much better with it. Although My mate was landing smooth hounds on my reel down south I still don't rate them

I have the penn fathom 25N but i mono magged it due to the braking problems that would occur (more brake blokes engaging if you hit it hard) and its the best reel i have owned .

I've jad a mag2 for a year now still looks and casts like its new.cast a couple of times full blast and forgot to put it in free spool but reel was fine ! So must be strong reels ! I've used the origional 525 too and find the mag 2 casts better for me. The only differance I've noticed is the mag 2 is louder when casting but depends what and how much oils in bearings . Took me a while to get used to mag 2 but learnt me to cast smoother. If your buying new give the reel a couple of months to run in they get faster and don't fluff up as easy .also use good casting line on these reels as they are fast and light and the wrong line want to nest up...I use nite crystal on mine and casts without fluffing up .my mates who have origional 525 have had problems with magnets poping out cages cracking and magnet setting moving but then the reels are a lot older now. I have a fathom 12 too stronger than amag 2 but standard unmagged fathom will not cast as far as a mag 2. Fatoms are nice though not keen on brakes though either too slow or too fast and the handle is offsett a little to far so when you winch it it tends to want twist the rod a bit.:-)

Got fathom 12 and mad 2, prefer the mag 2 great reel, but like lads say was very slow out of box, so stripped it out , now flies.
