  • Hake

Our local fishmonger has partnered up with a shop in Glasgow so can now get you most species of fish, which is great. This week we tried Hake. I had eaten it years ago in a restaurant and loved it, so we thought we would give it a go. £8 a kilo, so we got 2 huge fillets which we halved.

Nothing poncy, just egged them, dipped in breadcrumbs and fried. Had it with chips and minted peas. Absolutely amazing taste. Lynn loved it and wants to know where to catch them. I have never really heard of them being caught, shore or boat.

Anyone know of any being caught? Are they a deep water fish?

Just interested to hear any information you may have.

    Thanks

Depends on what "Hake" it is mate...deep water fish member of the cod, whiting family..eaten mostly around Spain area, you will find that when you buy cheap frozen white fish fingers, steaks, etc it will contain Hake. They started selling it in the local chippy around here and demand was high.

It was fresh mate, so I presume it was the real McCoy. Very meaty and a slightly pink hew to the flesh. Just lovely.

No bother, it's a good site, I think it has info on every species in our seas.

Never say never! Especially if you any the missus get out on a Scottish charter. I'm wondering if you could specifically ask to target them?

Hi, I use them quite often, I'm a chef, they do get caught off our coast, in the deep water like the farne deeps etc. but not in vast numbers. They are lovely eating. May be wrong but think the Scottish rod caught record is about 25lb from loch etive.

Yes, you never know what you may catch. We looked extensively at Scottish charter boats a few years back. On the west coast, charters are mainly for Skate and Tope (with some Pollock) and while I understand the attractions of this kind of fishing, it is not for us, as we like to catch eating fish, although we do eat Pollock. On the east coast you have Arbroath and Eyemouth. Arbroath reports are quite poor and we have tried Eyemouth a few times, but the north east and Whitby are far superior.

I know Whtby boats are willing to target a specific fish species if you book the whole boat, so maybe it is something to look into for the future. At the moment though, I am happy just to catch some Cod before targeting Hake.

You are right Glen, I googled it. The Hake was indeed 25lb, caught in 120m of water in Loch Etive in 1997.
