  • silloth then port carlisle good friday.

Headed over to silloth at first light to fish 2 hours down and 2 hours up at tommy legs. The grass was white with frost when I arrived but no wind at all and the sun coming up into a clear sky soon warmed things up and turned into a hot sunny day. Trecked across the bed of the solway to the tommy legs, timed it perfect as I arrived the water was just receding enough to allow me on. Had fresh crab, prawn, rag and macky for bait and was full of high hopes. First hour or so was dead then the fish came on. The action was not as frenetic as I'm used to there ended up with about 10 flounders 5 dabs 1 undersized whiting and a few well undersized codling (first time I've ever been bothered with undersized fish here, they were a pain). Most fish fell to crab with a couple of dabs on rag. Best fish 40 cm flounder.

After this a quick bite to eat then a short journey to port carlisle to my favourite mark on the sharp bend in the road. Set up well back from the water and waited for the bore to pass. Quite an impressive bore today really raged through. Waited around 15 mins after the bore passed for the current to slow then cast out two rods. Within 5 mins had fish on both rods. This set the pattern for the next 4 hours hardly ever wound in without at least one flounder on, most casts double shots a really good average stamp too. Nothing massive but quite a few around 40 cms. The sport was unrelenting really hard work keeping two rods on the go. They were taking any bait as long as it was tipped with a tiny sliver of macky. Have absolutely no idea how many fish I had it was too hectic but it was a huge number. Absolutely fantastic sport on the light gear. Had planned to grab some sleep in the car then fish silloth again in the morning over low water before heading back but I've decided instead to grab some sleep then fish a few hours at port carlisle over high water through the night and see if the flounders turn up again. Can't be bothered to start on the sand like I did this afternoon just going to fish of the grassy bank when the water reaches it, should get around two and a half hours fishing in.

Fantastic days sport, took lots of pics I'll post them up tomorrow night.
