Four Fishermen Rescued from Roker Pier

Fishermen were left stranded at the end of Roker Pier by a sudden change in sea conditions on Wednesday morning.

The four young men walked to the end of the pier while the weather was fine and the water was calm yesterday morning.

But the swell built up behind them and soon they became trapped and had to be brought to safety with the assistance of Sunderland Coastguard.

They were taken through the tunnel which runs under the pier.

CRO Neil Mearns said: "The fishermen at the end of the pier were quite safe where they were. Fortunately they remained where they were and did not try to return along the pier. We had no communication with them and that is what we were concerned about."

Thats not the story i heard.

I heard they had been on the pier all night and went along when the sea was quite big, they were told by fishermen fishing around the barrier that the waves were coming over just before the end yet they still went on.

If you believe what was printed about the sea coming away after they went on wednesday morning, then thats is wrong as the sea was building on Tuesday night and by wednesday morning was big, so someone somewhere has got it wrong.

we were fishing roker pier tuesday night when the sea start lifting around 7.30pm,i got soaked so we moved up to the steps at the roundhead,as we would be sheltered by the wall,shortly after 9.30 the waves started to come OVER the pier,i thought they would have came and closed the pier as their was a few fishing,i left,but the sea was not huge by that time and there was a club comp on,mostly fished at the barrier(hendon club i think)

Who decides when the pier should be shut? I've heard the keeper of the key lives a few mile away now hence the delay in opening the pier up again after a blow. If this is true it's an absolute liberty. It's our pier payed for by our money and it would be nice if we could maximise it's use. (business ethics, Publicprivatepartnershipetc) and that

i agree with that to an extent,but,the tunnel underneath the pier(used to be used to take anglers to safety) IS SUPPOSED TO HAVE COLLAPSED AND IS NO LONGER IN USE(sorry for caps)
so there are and always will be anglers who take risks on roker pier,therefore not only putting thier own lives at risk but also the lives of the lifeboat crew.The key holder should be living a lot closer that what he is,but hey thats life

The key keeper has access to modern telecommunications and transport still though. Why isn't the pier opened at the first available opportunity. If the stock exchange or council chambers were located on the end the beggar would never shut

The tunnel in the pier is still safe to use, as it was used to carryout the rescue that was mentioned earlier.

It was closed for a short while (last month) while they carried out work to replace the main electricity cable which supplies the lighthouse light.
