  • Why do people chop rods ???

Here's a question I've been asking myself last few weeks with all these high end zippys coming up for sale with anywhere from 3-6 inches lobbed off them why is it done? Is it a casting thing? A fishing tight spot thing ?.just seems extreme and a bit pointless to me not to mention the devaluing of it.

So how does taking 4 inches off the bottom of the butt make any difference?surely it can't to the action of the rod does it ?I'm not into tourney casting as you might gather hence question lol.

could be wrong but its the shorter field casters that do it

you might as well just move the position of the reel rather than cut the rod

From what I can gather they chop a few inches off to help them when there coming round to stop the rod from biting them. If a rods to stiff it holds you back and you do something called cut the corner something that I do to allow you to hit the rod hard. P.s I am miles away from being a torny caster I am sure cod magnet can explain in much more detail.

like i say i'm not into tourney casting just I didn't think 3-6 inches cut from the bottom of a butt would help or make a rod better but to each there own.Seems to me Terry must do rods the size he does for a reason must of done a lot of testing to come up with the rod sizes making them the best they can be.To me nothing looks more odd than the zeteque txl with butt longer than tip lol.

That's the main rod they cut down if it gives them 1yard more that could win a comp, remember rods are just tools if you cut a inch of a hammer and it made it easier to use with better results everyone would do it lol also you get zziplexs that's all different lengths that have not been cut I have had a few Zeteques now and they have all varied slightly in length.

tried this before and doesnt work.
like tony says, a alter in the reel position and same test achieved.

you would think the designers have made the length for a reason

for example, I tried a cast with the e1000 reel STANDARD 9 inches from bottom, clean action.
reel 20 inches from bottom, ( a bit like chopping the butt)........ action totally different. resulting in shorter distances,.

                      trial and error....?

yes thats it you find out rod is too long so you decide to sell it and you will sell it at a loss secondhand easier to chop a bit off the butt.
did you know panel pins comes in diff sizes ?

Personal preferance lots of casters like txls and sus for instance but find them overly long or in txls case slightly unbalanced ,you could as i do move reel further up as peter thain and paul baker do but other caster prefer shortened rod lots of top casters chop rods andy green ,jay lee, martin watson for instance. Also the longer a rod the more powerfull a caster needs to be and a shorter rod can be cast far quicker

Substitute the field for the sea, put a hook with some bait on and you'll be amazed, you might actually catch a fish standing in a field digging leads out is not for me but each to their own lol
