• Thanks scottyjim for the link...and Leon.

The article on the sacn site has a section on Fixed Nets. That is exactly what is (and now hopefully was)taking place in this instance. Its a hard one to prove but to quote the fisheries officer "We are now aware their may be a problem and will be keeping a close eye on the situation,"

I was aware of the EA hotline number but did not realise it would also get through to the Sea Fisheries Protection. I will contact the Sea Fisheries Committee and ask why they dont at least have that number on their website.

I also think that that with the authors permission ( I think I know who it is ) that the sacn article would be an ideal "article" or have its own navigation button over there on the left <<<<.

But perhaps the contact number could be put at the top of the page not the bottom...over to you Elton on that one

Cheers

• Dave as far as im aware the fixed nets regulations only apply from 1st April until 30th October where gill nets must have 6metres above the head rope at any state of the tide .There are no regulations north of the tyne during the winter months according to the sea fishery officer i spoke to .

• Rodbender,

The bylaws are a minefield with different rules for different areas...for the area concerned you have the dates wrong...and you have the headline setting wrong.
I am not getting at you ...just trying to point out how confusing this all is. Clear information IS NOT AVAILABLE TO US...unless you want to spend hours on end studying it.

This confusion comes partly from the fact that the law was are set by an organisation set up 110 years ago and last reviewed in 1965.

No wonder we dont know what going on...

• Dave what are the dates for the area north of the tyne and how close to land can the netters come without breaking the bylaws during the winter months.

• Dave. Can only agree 1000% with you. Since this thread has started I've begun to search around for information on the net. It's a complete mess.
I always wondered what DEFRA was basing their assumptions on, that anglers were willing to pay for a licence to fish. Maybe I found out.

DEFRA Economics & Statistics - Economic Research

They have obviously put out some kind of questionnaire in the past where they’ve asked the usual questions “Are you prepared to pay more if you can catch bigger, more species, more quantity fish?” etc. etc. , and those that have replied saying “Yes”, have proverbially dropped us in it. Here are some choice quotes,

“The choice experiments indicated that all types of angler were willing to pay more for larger fish (£0.22 per 1% increase in size) and for greater diversity in the catch (£11.38 to catch different species from those usually caught). However, only shore anglers were willing to pay for more fish (£0.81 per extra fish caught).”

And

“ Anglers catch, on average, between 5 (shore anglers) and 13 (boat anglers) fish per trip and retain 32 to 39% of their catch. “.

Shame on you shore anglers willing to pay more, for more fish, and you catching five fish every trip as it is, and even worse, keeping two in-size fish every trip as well. This is the type of information that DEFRA is basing their strategy on. It makes you weep.

• just had a message that the boat owner apparently knows who iam and is pretty ****ed of,threats were mentioned and the like.
just a word of warning lads.be very carefull when posting news like this as this sort of thing generally happens.
hope he has the right name or some unsuspecting angler may get a little supprised.
as for me well lets see how far it goes, whether its the truth or someone trying to be intimerdating, unfortunatley it doesnt work with me.

The dates vary by area and are in the pm I sent you.

Fixed nets need a minimum ditance between the headline and the net which varies from area to area and directly affects the distance out thy have to be set at as a result.

The only laws covering trawlers that I can find is one that says ...

" if you can here an odd scraping noise up the pointed end we are probably too close to land"

although there are laws covering the size of boats which differ in each region.

• I fished Howick last night Dave, got bored after two hours and had had a pretty ****ty day , was in a foul fettle so decided to go home and a have alove affair with a bottle of Rouge. A boat was sitting approx 3 miles offshore for the duration that I was down there and a mate of mine fished there the rest of the night and caught the only fish that was weighed in by the club ( a cod of 1lb 15oz) and he reckoned the boat was there most of the night....Anyway that's besides the point....it could have been owt. BUT. another lad I know was fishing a mark a wee bit further south and got a phone call from someone in the know asking them if they were fishing that particular mark as they could see a headlamp and knew this lad sometimes fishes there...The lad said yup that's me...to which the reply came. 'well you're wasting your time, they've been netting all around there since the sea settled.....Any Chance of pushing for a Golden 5 miles?????

• Red5,
Its something we will have to live with. At the moment there is cod quota available and as such commercials are out there after it.

In an ideal world there would be plenty for everyone but until such times return we can only push to the government to make this happen.

Mark gave me an excellent website where you can trackboats in realtime and see what is going on. All boats over 14 metres are tracked so it makes intresting viewing if you think a particular vessel is a problem. Gives you name and lots of other details. Mark tells me you can even send em a imsi message

Will post link later when I am on the pc that has it.

Cheers
Dave
