bit of a tough one really! only places I can think of is off the rocks up towards dunstanburgh castle, or I have heard that in the harbour at amble can be ok, fished from the north side. Its a long walk to get to it, but you can get right out onto the mouth of the river. One of the trout mags even had an article on it last year.
I\'ve caught plent off the rocks in scotland and nothing fights like a mackeral on light trout gear, it makes 12lb rainbows feel like a wet dish cloth, had one lasy year about a pound and a half on a 7foot 6wt brook rod that took nearly 20 minutes to land, tripped aall me fly line and most of the backing on its first run - blissʎɐqǝ uo pɹɐoqʎǝʞ ɐ ʎnq ı ǝɯıʇ ʇsɐן ǝɥʇ sı sıɥʇ.
Thought for the day:
Some people are like slinkies - not really good for anything but bring a smile to your face when thrown down the stairs
Converting an MFV Fifie trawler type thing.

Iwould try a blast of the pipe. Iys very close to the water ..the thing with the pipe is ,,,IF they are around you will catch them on anything, spinners, floats, sinking flies. Best time as you know is at first light,, or just as its getting dark... try just befor the bend. thers a flat rock that looks like Table mountain ??? come back down the pipe about 15 yds thers a little out crop that looks like a pair of tits .. thers a nice gap between the rocks thats deep and not a lot of weed Its worth a go ,,,, dont bother if the low tide is above a 1.5// a 1.7 ,, yiu will only get about an hour or so or get wet Good luck..TichTich

worth a cast off the ramp on the bay side of the old north pier at sunderland, not the best of places but produces quite a few macky near high water on big tides, beauty of it is if using fly gear you can get right down to the water and no one else will be fishing there as the masses will be on the end of roker pier. as i say perhaps not the best place in the world for macky but they are there and it would be suitable for fly fishing, i suppose huge numbers of macky are not the object when using this method.

why stop at mackeral?
everything we fish for with bait except maybe eels will take a fly when they are feeding on livebait and some like pollack and coalies will take a fly almost anytime!
fish caught so far on the fly include coalies, pollack, seatrout, mackeral, codling, bass, wrasse and flounder! the key to consistant results, apart from mackeral is to fish after dark, the ratio of fish is at least 10 to 1 during darkness
i,ll bring some of the flies i use over to the nwsa this weekend chris just to give you an idea what type of patterns are successful in the north east.
