Is this not a case of the papers making quite a high proportion of their money from the advertisers.
For example lets assume there are 200,000 people in the sunderland area who can read and 20,000 of them buy the paper they would set their advertisers rates on 20,000 people seeing the advert.
Put the same content on the web and get another 2000 online readers you have increased your circulation by 10% at very little extra cost as the editorial content is already payed for, but can now say to your advertisers we have 22,000 readers ....so your advertising costs have gone up.
Add to that the website is full of sponsors and adverts....seems like a good money maker to me.
