jeez Jim - is nowhere safe

Surely the site can be registered in a robots name that lives in jersey then we can all talk lawfully and legally about such seditious things as fishing, football, politics and telly.

We will soon have to resort to meeting personally next to old enamel bathtubs with the taps turned full on to say anything to anyone about anything without getting nicked. And then we'd all have to kill each other anyway.

In day to day life I mean, It's ok here like usually

Don't worry about it Mick, as I said, it was fine mate. It was an honest post, made to give info and not trying to steal something from someone, that is where the problem often occurs. Some people try to post things and take credit for them, or not give credit to the original author for them either. That is not right, what you did was fine as far as I can see

Lol Ian, you are not far away there mate. Once upon a time it would be the website that took most of the flack now it will usually be the poster. In law as you will no doubt know, even ignorance of the law will not protect you. It is rare that something happens but it also depends on what is written too I would guess.

That said, I think it is only correct to ask someone before taking something from their website and posting it elsewhere, even just to be polite.

"remember when John Bridges was first building NESA, he approached a certain Sea Angling magazine if he could use some of their photos (very politely) he got a very forthright letter back threatening him with legal action if he used anything from their magazine, all they had to do was politely say sorry you cant".

As Alan said here, all they had to say was sorry you can't. Luckily someone asked first. Personally if it had been me there would still be no mention of that "certain sea angling magazine" made on this forum to this day as I think that was way over the top. I bet they would take every mention they could get now lol.

          Jim.

Ell's right though - if you look at the websites that represent the angling publications they are pretty flimsy...although (assuming I have the right certain publication) they have started up one of their own which isn't too bad

Tony, it has to be looked at from both sides.

Just for instance, imagine you wrote a great piece on here about bait. You took ages to write it and took loads of photographs to help with the explanation of presentation on the hook and then a few days later you found it on another website with no explanation of where it came from or who wrote it and the person there trying to make out that they had done it all. How exactly would you feel? The laws on plagiarism are there for a reason and rightly so mate.

              Jim.

Yes Jim I must agree there ,one of my posts ages ago was copied on another site .... you know me ,it wouldn't have been a problem if they'd asked first and it did get my back up a bit that they didn't think to ask ,so I understand exactly what you're saying to Tony .
You can take the lad out of Walker but .......

I know mate - not condoning plagiarism..was just agreeing with Ell's comment on the flimsy nature of some publications online "resources"

As part of the Uni' assignments you have to be very careful not to directly paraphrase or use someone elses work and try to pass it off as your own...if you "quote" anyone else you have to cite verse and reference in triplicate to cover your a***...that's what takes the most time when writing the essays

Yes Steve, I think I remember that mate, not right at all.

Tony, that must be a major PITA having to cite verse and reference every time mate. I can understand why though lol.

Lol Coddy, they are both right mate, we all know what you mean lol.

As said previously though, nothing the matter with passing on information but if in doubt, get permission, or don't post it if it is from another website. It can save a lot of arguments lol.

                          Jim.
