  • Rod choice: Chewing the cud

Had a session at the Spile yesterday with my Kompressor SS Mk2 with metal joint rings up for swap for a Mk1 Kompressor Sport and Abu 7000.

Thanks for dropping down to show me them Lee.
Anyway the difference wasn't anything significant and I saw no reason to swap.

The SS is a beast of a rod and I just can't wind it up to get the best out of it. I'm pushing 70 and not built like Godzilla so I can't achieve any real distance that the rod can chuck a lead.

To emphasise that, big Ken, Himself26 on here, turned up to have a few chucks with a new Nemesis and also had a crack at the SS.

Now, I was also using the Okuma Magnetix 20 on it with 50lb braid. Mag 20 is a level wind too so that restricts the distance a bit as well.
Anyway Ken emptied my spool when he cast. I mean down to the knot.....
Line diameter of .35 so that's around 200m. Whoever said Okuma were $hit are wrong. I think they're good value for money. It did show that my casting is a load of $hite and I must admit a few lessons would no doubt improve that but possibly not significantly, but it more than anything seemed to show me that the SS is just too much of a beast for someone of my age without Popeye style muscles.

    Anyway that's by the by.
Ken has offered a look at a Nemesis Plus and a six and bait for swap potential.

The SS has a single inner ceramic liner lost due to my rod stand getting dragged over yesterday with the huge swell although the ceramic is still in place.

I've also had an offer of a Zippy Profile with a £50 top-up from me.
Not keen on anything other than a straight swap really.

What I seem to think would be suitable is the Tip Tornado Sport.

What I need is something I can bend, something with the flexibility to bend gently in a swell rather than surge all over the place and which has a positive bite detection.

I don't have a lot of knowledge on rods myself so of course would like to try some of the ones out that members think would be OK.
In the end I might just stick with the SS and eat more meat and take a few casting lessons.

Just to top out my question I have a few rods for different sorts of ground.
I have a Daiwa Seahunter as a bass rod and for flatties. The Sonik SKS for light light clean beach work and estuary, a SK3 for beach where a bigger swell or longer casting distance demands something extra as well as some snaggy marks, a Maxx Surf 15' for clean beach at a distance and of course the SS. Ths Maxx was something of a mistake though and lesson learned there.
So I have most areas covered but the SS is the one I have the problem with.

the tip sport certainly isnt a soft rod and stands better in the wind than a lot of stiffer rods. in fact its better in the wind than my ttr.

unless it was a formula tip aport you had, these are softer through age.

i fished with a tip sport amd komp sport side by side for a year. the komp sport is no more powerful than the tip sport. plus its thicker and heavier. i bought the komp sport as a heavy ground rod and was really dissapointed so sold it.

my tip sport pulled a lot of double figure fish from rough ground with no problems and handled cod in norway easily. ask Nicky, he had cod over 40lb on one.

lynnzer, have a chat with bob c. hes tried most of the better rods for similar reasons to yourself so might have a good idea what will suit you.

They r a powerfull tool & do need a decent casting style to get the benefit out of e'm,regards the profile, not designed 4 the ruff stuff more of a clean beach rod, very slim n lightweight not 4 big leads n baits.Plenty of easy cast rods with grunt out there, just a case of finding the rite rod 4 u.

Hi you should maybe take a look at a c3ld really nice rod or the tippy supermatch or tippy ld all decent rods but would probably let you put a better bend in them compared to the Komp ss.

Agree with that... Mk1 tip tornado sport is softer in the tip than the ss mk2 but the new tts mk2 is fairly similar and not soft at all.

The zippy is not worth paying extra for mate. Depending on what your after, scaley has a century CCC for sale in the for sale section. That is a C curve rod so despite your age, it should be easier for you to compress when casting. It has plenty of backbone aswell for all but the rough stuff. Thy are rated as a mice ground rod. Your rod is probs worth a bit more than that one so you may need to sell before you can buy....

I would give it a try using 63/4 or 7oz lead loads the rod better with a reel up overhead cast.I found it alot easier alltough i only have sport mk2.

                      C3LD seems a nice rod.
May try one if anyone has one they could offer.
As it stands I broke the inner ring on one of the guides on my SS. Damned rod rest pulled over in the swell at the Spiles on Thursday last week.
I'm arranging to have this done shortly.

So, still considering other options but so far the C3LD seems a good choice.

Hi yes the c3ld is a really nice rod and easy to put a bend in so casts very well.

Cccld is maybe a little lightweight (mixed ground at best) compared to the standard ccc which is what I would go for which is more mixed to light rough. I have had both rods... The ld version is brilliant but defo a softer rod lacking in a tiny bit of backbone that the standard version has. Century only retail the ld version now though so you would have to buy the standard second hand. C curve rod and as such both can be cast good distances with even an overhead thump casting style.
