Just watched it. Typical commercial fisherman. Trying to justify the unjustifiable. Took them three days to find some cod with the biggest as far as I could see around 5-6lb. Almost everything else around 2-3lb. If that was an excercise to prove the North Sea is full of cod, then it was a pathetic failure. Trouble is, Joe Publicdoesn't know any better, so they will probably believe their hype.

yip
watched one last month about the guys on the trawlers for prawns and said that they were scarce and that the cod were back.
only trouble was they were on a fish trawl with prawn nets not very far out.what the joe public saw was very few prawns but they were of good size some would say clonkers.
they had baskets of cod which were all thrown overboard.
what is the point in those guys trying to fib the joe public into thinking there are more than there is.yet again they want us the sea-shore anglers to bail them out.surely the local government/fisherie officers are not that thick.our are they themselves turning a blind eye to keep there jobs save also/????

it seems as if the commercial fishermans public relations effort didnt fool many people, if there where plenty fish there the boats would not be out a week at a time, they would be in after days, like they used to unloading there catch and going back out for more, more, more, more and more, until the price for them is so low it was not worth going out for more, more, more and some more.
ps stop the quota system it is uselessAlan

when I left school many moons ago (83) my first job was on the trawlers the catches that were shown tonight were small compared to then . seen some big cod pulled up in the nets and it was nonstop gutting and sorting till the nets were hauled again ,what I saw tonight was a joke if the stocks are left alone to recover maybe we will see those catches again

where there's money there's greed,i bet they did'nt give it a second thought years ago, just a shame its the pleasure angler thats suffering.
Cover the coastline with windmills,it will look s#it but it might keep the commercial lads further off shoreCheers Alan...

I missed the end of the programme. The first three quarters were horrifying. Did you see that sea in Canada which was choca with cod had been TOTALLY fished out of cod. Fishing has been banned since 1996 ish and they still do not know if stocks will ever recover.
And that wolly on the trawler saying there was loads of cod and all he pulled up were small ones. All on film off the camera crew.
I was hoping for a happy ending like the trawler pulling loads of double figure cod and the fish were in the millions all hiding 40 mile off.
I take it this did not happen.
Look at Norway and Iceland were stocks are protected-we should be doing the same.Personal best, 12.5lb Tope Scotland. 22/05/2012.

Mick there is a paperback book called "COD" by Mark Kurlansky all about the Grand Banks and the Newfoundland cod fisheries, and how the Bretons & Basques used to sail to the fishing grounds and salt the cod on the way back to port. They had cod wars then, and the fish was used as currency to trade with spain and other med countries A very interesting read.. it's not a new book but can still be ordered..

For want of not repeating myself have a look at the licenses thread as to my comments on this programme.
Personally both me and the Mrs watched the programme and she was first to comment about the fact these fishermen were saying there is loads of fish in the north sea ...yet they blanked for two days in terms of profitability. She knows naff all about fishing.
This is the second publicity stunt by the commercials in the last month. The official gov surveyor says there are signs of a cod recovery and they want more. Ices are recommending an increase in quota for the first time in many years...a small increase based on the potential that north sea cod will still increase in mass for all to catch.
The last SFC meeting i was at they had a presentation as to how to "Improve the image of commercial fisheman"...now if they were doing everything right this kind of image change would not be necessary. I believe that these programmes are part of this publicity stunt.
The commercials and seafish have a big budget...personnaly I think this is part of this image adjustment...and also I think they shot themselves in the foot doing it.
Anglers are being asked their opinions...make sure you have your say...because programmes like this just convince me we are being screwed and have been for the last 120 years. They are worried about potential change..are we?
