    a have a really nice 7 ft Berkley lightning bass/spinning rod,

    it has cork grip above and below the reel seat,

    would any of you advise applying varnish to this....?

    I would just sand down if it's really old & dirty looking with a very fine wet & dry there used to be a cork sealer I used to get from temples in whitley bay.
    Not sure if it's still available though

      As tony said just fine wet and dry or wire wool I wouldn't varnish as it will just make grip slippy also will just flake off with constant gripping it.
