  • Different Rods For Different Jobs

Just been browsing NETS forum where an angler lists his armoury of rods, all of which he deems necessary... ffs he had more than the local tackle shop in his collection and he doesn't collect as a hobby! The list literally ran into thousands of pounds worth!

Just wondering if the fish swimming around on a clean beach realizes the angler is fishing with a rough ground rod or a handline for that matter and decides not to attack his bait? Do they really catch more fish? Of course not! Logic tell's us that a weak rod will struggle hauling through kelp and rocks but a strong rod will do it with relative ease and thus should handle clean ground no problem at all! Yet he carries a rough ground rod, a mixed ground rod, a match rod, a distance rod and an estuary rod!

Now I know there is a lot of nostalgic folk on here that will quite happily reminisce about the days they fished with a handline or a broom shank with an old scarborough reel attached to it with jubilee clips and they will quite happily tell us they caught more fish in them days, so ask yourself do we really need to spend as much as we do on unnecessary rods.

Iv'e quite happily used one rod for all my fishing for years apart from spinning where a beachcaster cant possibly be expected to cast 40gm spinners.

A quality stiffish rod will quite happily handle all situations, rough, clean, estuary, bass, flattie and pier fishing without any problems.

Bottom line - there is a lot of people out there who are nothing more than advertisers wet dreams!

Don't get me wrong... if you have money to burn and you think it improves your fishing then spend it. All I'm saying is all this talk of different rod's for different job's puts a lot of potential newcomers to the sport off when they tally up the cost of tackle!

It's the same with cars, houses, gadgets...there's people what's got to have everything...I'm same as you, got one maybe two rods for the beach/rocks and a good spinning rod for lighter stuff

Well lads i'm a bit like the people you are talking about.......i have to have everything i do only use 1 rod for most occasions tho, apart from my spinning rod and boat rod. I just like the option of having a lighter rod for better sport and a stronger rod for rock fishing. As for gadgets, cars and houses......the more the better

I have a few different rods myself. I would certainly never dream of using my rock rod for pulling Whiting and flatties in from a beach mark. I also have a couple of Carp rods that I occasionally use for very light beach work as it is great sport. I once caught a 2 1/4 lb Codling with a Carp rod and it took a bit of getting in. I can just about remember every nod off that fish, if I had been using my rock rod it would probably been forgotten now. Horses for courses I think.

            Codbasher,

I have to agree. Some people are tackle tarts and blame lack of catching on the wrong gear...a marketing mans wet dream. Others concentrate on the bit the fish see...the terminal gear.

Person one on leaving the beach will tell you he had the wrong rod after a blank, person two had the wrong bait. Both will have something to work on for their next session and will be happy.

The other side is the chuck and chance it brigade...they just want to be out their and enjoy it ...I count miself in that bracket...I dont want break records...I just want to catch a few good uns and forget work/home and the inland revenue for a few hours.

We all spend a lot on our sport regardless of the "bracket" we fall into. Just equate that to what the small boat owner spends on his sport and the cost of rods is the last thing to worry about. Do I need a 1k boat or a 20k boat? Will either catch me more...probably not but I know which one I would be happier fishing from

Recently I have walked along the tyne on an evening and seen the kids fishing just north of smiths dock. Total tackle value probably under 20 quid. They are catching fish and enjoying themselves. Least they are not out mugging pensioners.

We all spend what we can justify on our chosen sport cos we love it...and long may it continue.

Just as a comparison ...up untill the last few years I was a very keen coarse angler. My rod bag which is still in the garage contains 7 tubes. 1 pole tube, tube full of spare pole tips, carp/pike rod, light feeder rod, medium feeder rod, float rod and a heavy float rod for the baggin waggler. this lot went with me on every fishing trip...no wonder I have a bad back. Oh and this was pleasure fishing not matches ...the only match fishing I ever did was when I sponsored them.

I have still to try shore fishing but dont know where to start and I love my boat fishing.

            Cheers
            Dave

I have two rods, one stiffish Centrey i was given, ideal for heavy work and a long light and flexible R/T rod that i twin with a F/S reel for light beach work.
With the lighter rod i can at least see and feel that there is a small fish on,get it in and returned so it can grow.
I take the risk that a 20 pound cod MAY take my bait,Yeah right.
But i still say that with the correct tactics a larger fish on clean ground can still be caught using a lighter rod on the odd occasions this may occur.

                          looking good

I agree with cod basher, its the buisness end that counts, some people think its a fashon parade with all there fancy gear, but I bet they catch no more than joe blogs fishing next to them, its all about targeting what u want to fish for and getting a well presented bait out to temt them, the fish are not interested if u got century bb or £5.99 glass effort:

just to make the point again, seems some people aint reading what i say..i am a rod collector.i collect old classic surfcasting rods, from conoflex dc to dawia awt, original zzipy primo etc,i DO NOT use theese rods for fishing,i just collect them,so why the slagging off,for fishing i use pretty modern rods, like i say i never carry them to a mark,i take 2 rods out fishing with me and 2 or 3 reels.its the same rods and reels i take all the time realy as i prefer to fish rough ground so i take 2 rough ground rods,i dont fish clean beaches often but if i do then i take my tip tornado with me.i will never ever take any of my collection out fishing as there aint many left of theese old CLASSIC rods..do you not realise how mutch time and effort i have put into sourcing theese rods, some of them there are only a handfull left in the world.so please before you write wrongs about me.ask the truth,im a freindly guy and dont mind people asking questions but i just hate liars...no where in my posts have i evevr said i use theese rods never mind say i they are all nessasry, thanks folks and if anyone has any old rods no matter the condition please pm me..pmsl.i am a collector

iam in particulary looking for a silstar orion 11ft 6 surfcaster by les moncrief...if you have one lying around(only 3 ever made)please contact me
