  • Shortening the Butt?

Does shortening the butt on a rod really effect the action of the rod? Two rods i have have had a small amount taken off the butt and one rod has lost some off the tip. I deffinately noticed a change with a shorter tip, but am not too sure if the shorter butt makes much more different. A friend said shortening the butt would make the rod feel stiffer, but i found taking 6'' off the butt of a PZ300t made it more manageable. Any answers would be appreciated as i have been wondering about it.
    Cheers

My abu suveron has a butt extension of about 3 feet. I have taken the rubber base off the butt and put it onto the rod, The rod is now two piece and thirteen feet. My reel is seated at the bottom.
Feels much more manageable and a lot less cumbersome.

I have only ever saw one angler using the butt extension before.

    Mick.

      Is it a reducer?

I am not quite sure what you mean Mick, do you mean the carbon reducer. They are normally around 18'' in length and the reel can be mounted on them for reel down casting to increase leveridge i believe. I understand the physics behind it that a shorter lever will require more force to move it, but i wanted to know how it effects the rods action when casting reel up butt. Sprry its my fault i should have been more specific in the first place.

If you cut a rod back from the tip, it makes the rod feel more powerful, because it moves the the stiffer bits of the rod nearer the tip. Sometimes it makes it cast further as well. Please everybody DON'T start chopping bits off your rod tip until your absolutely certain what the end result will be. I know you won't but I had to put that bit in just in case. Once it's off you can't put it back.

Taking a bit off the butt does the opposite and shortens the stiffer part of the rod. This moves the softer bits of the rod further down the rod so it feels easier to cast. Beware of doing this with some top end rods as they sometimes have a stiffer section in the lower part of the butt. Zziplex started it with a Powerpoint, and also now century use a gearbox. Cutting too much off the bottom of these butts, can move your top hand above the stiffer section, this will feel very strange indeed and ruin the idea behind the design.

          Thanks

Thanks for the explanation Peter T. I was of the impression that shortening the but made the tip feel stiffer. I have never been too drastic and removed large sections from the butt, 6'' max but have heard of other people removing up to 12-18''. I guess its what works for you ultimately in the end, but i must admit it is a bit scary cutting carbon off expenisive rods.

The bairns shut a door on my G5 Supasport and snapped the last 3 inches off the tip of the rod. Best thing that ever happened to it. It used to bounce about in the wind but now it's a lot stiffer but still with excellent bite detection and seems to cast a lot better. Not sure about the butt thing though
