  • Cheap Rod and Multiplier

Im after a beach rod and multiplier for no more than £150 quid for the two.
I got canny boat gear and a load of coarse stuff but the time has come to get into the shore angling properly. At at the minute i can't afford to spend a small fortune (like i did with the rest of me stuff) but im sick of borrowing gear on the odd occasion i go up craster or along to blyth. Started a new job that lets me get out more at weekends so need to get me own stuff. Any suggestions on what rod or reel to buy? thought id ask the experts!

    cheers

I'm no expert but you won't go wrong with a Ron Thompson Axellerator and a slosh 20 or 30 reel. If you buy them both together you should get them in your budget.

Great rod for the money £100-110 aprox
    Reel £60-70.

For £150 you can get a canny combo. AMH Angling at Annfield Plain had some lovely rods the other day well under a ton. As to reels i would look at okuma magnetex multiplyers. They look spot on and for a good price. New for something like £50-£55.
NE Tackle had some nice Greys beachcaster rods at £80 and okumas on display at Hartlepool.(also have shop in Sunderland). Again easily buy combo for under £150 and you could get some 15lb line chucked in.
Better than second hand and guaranteed.

      Mick.

If you are fishing Craster and Blyth pier you want something with a stiff tip mate. Look back at past threads on here and you will get an idea what the lads all think.

If you are after a rod just for the beach I would have a look around a few tackle shops tell them what you are after and see what they have. No need to buy straight away, try a few different shops and see if the same type of rods are coming up and take a note of the prices and then go back. I spent a full day and hit just about every shop north of the Tyne before I found what I was looking for lol, worth it though.

If it is for the beach only, you don't want anything too stiff as I am sure you will know it just kills the sport. If you are going to use it everywhere you want something in the middle. Same with the reel if just for the beach you don't need something that will winch a ship in lol.

            Hope this helps.

            Jim.

Don't buy a rubbish reel! Abu, Penn, Daiwa maybe the Okuma fella. Do not get a Jimmy Nakajima 8000 or anything similar.

Very good point Mr. Thompson. I am not wanting to get into a my Slosh is better than your 525 here and am just making a point lol.

I have a couple of 525GS and a 525 mag and although I use the GSs just for light line I use the Mag for the rocks loaded with 35 lb line. My point is you can use a good reel for either.

                Jim.

steer clear of the fladen multi`s, i have now destroyed three of them casting, the shakespear xp4000 is the same reel in another colour, basically the rachet comes on mid cast, second the level wind gives up early on as well, back up on both reels is short of abysmal, never owned a penn so i can only say get abu or shimano, both have good pedigree`s

as to rods, i would if you can try as many as possible before settling on one, dont get fixed reel seats as you will find you have to adapt to suit the rod not the rod to suit you

Personaly found amh to be very pricey ..asked for a price on an abu sports mag and quoted nearly 150quid

Frasers,Billys and Ian woods all give 10%discount for being a nesa member Personally would try and get a second hand mk1 apollo and either a slosh 20/30

                            RT Ax

The Ron Thompson Axcellerator or DAM Adrenaline for £100 are decent mixed/rough ground rods for the money. Some places are doing the Abu Suveran XP for £115 aswell which is a good deal. As for reels a Daiwa SL20SH for £70 new would cope with nearly all eventualities.

                              Greys GRX-S

Forgot to mention this rod, would suit for most of your fishing for around £80.
