Seasoned anglers know when and when not to fish their own stretch of coastline, and as someone on here said it is a calculated risk, knowing the state of the tide/wind & imminent forcast etc. what happened at Tynemouth will happen on lots of fishing shots during stormy weather. what we dont need are the comparisons between the incidents at Whitby and Tynemouth,it's just sensationalist journalism to smear our sport. If we are eventually expected to pay for a licence, do we go fishing when there are flat calm conditions and no fish? Stay safe..If in any doubt dont fish

Well first of all let me say the Photograph does not tell the whole story. I'm from Seaham and know the grounds and conditions here very well indeed having fished in and around the Seaham area for the last 40 years or so.

The picture shows Anglers fishing the Spiles end of the Pier and they are in no danger whatsover unless of course any of them was stupid enough to stand on top of the 3.5 ft concrete wall which is hidden by the breaking sea. This area can be fished in big seas and to be honest looking at that photograph it does not look to be huge as the article suggests. I mean would you park your car with the boot open if it were that bad.

To the right of the Anglers and the cars is a large concreted area meaning you cannot get hit by a breaking wave and washed off. Any huge wave coming from the Seaward side would drain into the slope, this is the area inside the Pier directly in front of the cars which is an extremely shallow sandy beach.

Once past the gates is another story whatsover, there is no protection at all from the sea and any slight to moderate sort of Northerly swell will put the Pier well out of bounds to Anglers.

I'm all for safety and completely against stupidity BUT before people jump to the wrong conclusions these guys fishing were not in any danger whatsoever unlike some of the stories of late.

I heard tonight that the port of tyne authority are going to take out a private prosecution on the guys who were fishing on Tynemouth Pier. This must mean that the police cannot do anything against those who climbed the gate to fish on the pier??

the (spiles) bottom end of the north peir is safe to fish in big seas .
its by luck the photo was took as a wave hit the bottom end of the peir
you cant be washed off this area at all as theres cliffs behind you and the slope beach
                        past the dividing wall
i would fish the same area in same conditions theres nothing wrong in fishing that spot in big sea's

                        picture shows wrong image

                          trespass

can the police arrest a person for trespass if they have not forced entary .i thought trespass was a civil law exept for docks railways airports and neuclar power stations
old anglers never die -they just smell that way

at the time the photo was took, it was only heavy spray that was going over the spiles .very shortly after everyone did come of the spiles as it was getting heavier going .no one was hurt and no one was in danger . by the way the photo must have been took from about 500 yards away from near the old police station ,so the one who took the photo was no where near the anglers .
