  • Coast Guards and rescue lads all over tonight?

Anyone know why, I stopped at Roker and they said something about a boat out of Hartlepool probably a hoax - our lass is saying something about an accident off Whitburn

    Hello Charlie,
I was out fishing last night/this morning for high water and saw the lifeboats and helicopters searching in the water and along the shore from Whitburn beach to the ranges area.
As I was fishing the coastguard came on foot along the cliffs and asked if I had saw anyone with a radio in the area as they had recieved a radio distress signal from that area.
They said that they thought it was a hoax!!
If it was a hoax it's maddening to think that someone has done that, it must have cost a fortune.
    Regards Ian.

A boat has capsized just off Whitby, only 1 body has been recovered so far... the other 2 are still missing.

There was something on Radio Newcastle about a big search and rescue operation as a result of a radio distress call.
It was discovered after all the boats choppers etc were out that it was a hoax and the calls were coming from land.

                Hello,
Yes mate, two different alerts. The one I witnessed at Whiburn was a hoax, I've just read about it in today's Journal. The coastguard lads I spoke to were asking if I'd noticed anyone around the cliffs as that was where the call/alarm was traced to.
Can you imagine how much it cost to raise the lifeboats and the helicopter, not to mention the potential risk to peoples lives!!
                Regards, Ian.

Cullercoats inshore was launched about 8.30 Sunday morning, followed by the Tyne boat shortly after. Looked as though they were practising to me.
