Not too exotic but a corkwing wrasse would be my rarest.

Now that is a reare and unexpected catch. I've had a few Red Mullet (not actually a member of the Mullet family, more properly known as a Goatfish) out of the Solent when I lived in Portsmouth but even on the south coast they are a very rare catch being a warm water species more commonly seen in the Med.

I had that Turbot on Sunday but mine would have to be this little Grey Gurnard I caught on Seaham North pier a couple of years ago:

Not me but my mate had a mackerel on lugworm and squid. Strange thing was, it was on the 5th of December off cambois beach.

Strangest looking would have to be the trusty old Long Spined Sea Scorpion

perfectly harmles as Wee Ver said, but a face only a mother could love lol
harmless when you pick them up like that but they've got some really sharp spines on them, seen a lot of these caught over the years.

A hagfish, horrible slimey funny coloured thing that I had no idea of what it was at the time. Also caught a jelly fish which isn't really strange or unusual lol, it was unusual as it was on a spinner.

My mate had a Gilthead Bream off the hot water outfall at Cambois in the 1980's sometime. It is now in Hancock museum as the only other one caught locally was at Newbiggin in a net around 1900 if I remember correctly!

Had a Haddock out of the Tyne up at Jarrow pedestrian tunnel about 6yrs ago. And a nice size Doggy off the Walkway a couple weeks ago.
A bad days fishing is better than a good day at work.
