This is a good link showing another view.

BBC NEWS | Science/Nature | Minister criticised on cod quotas

Seems that the government want to go against the advice of the scientists they employ to advize them ....to protect the livelyhood of fishermen.

Its also intresting to note that gear is available to reduce bycatch but the very commercials who complain about the bycatch refuse to use it cos they loose some target species.

It really makes my blood boil to know that the minute things show the slightest signs of a recovery the commercials demand to be allowed to catch more which will no doubt reverse that trend.

      Cheers

It's in the Magna Carter Dave:

section 3, appendix iiixv - "Whenst it is thus that any freeman should need to. He may pillage and rape the sea for his own, and his kins financial gain. The Crown shall doth turneth a blind eye for taxeth He the Freeman shall endure"

Just read that link from Dave about the new net technology...

...If fish were fluffy and cuddly and lived in holes in the ground can you imagine this level of neglect and general disinterest from the public? It shows up a pathetic side to most people who proclaim to be interested in animal welfare and the environment.

It's trendy to go up in arms when people suggest culling badgers or when the Japanese suggest taking 50 humpback whales for "scientific research" but no-one except anglers and commercials give a flip about "boring" old slimy fish.

I guess it's the same sort of thing with cardie-wearing vegetarians who "only eat fish". What? Yeah, cos fish are grown in allotments right next to the carrots. No, veggie, they're hauled out of the sea in a big, indiscriminate net and are either crushed to death or suffocate...

          ...But no-ones bothered except fishermen.

Of course there must be solutions to these quota problems and if the public cared about it the polititians would be forced to find those solutions and implement them.

This is totally shocking. I understand that these fishermen do this for a living but the government should do something about all of these fish getting wasted like introducing a larger holed net/grill with a smaller one behind it. The larger net/grill automatically discarding larger fish and only allowing smaller stuff to go through leaving the smaller net to collect the prawns.

What I can't understand is why were all these fish boxed just to make a point when most of them were blatantly alive when first caught?

I too am not too upt to scratch with these tactics but to think I really preach conservation to the young'uns I teach and then to see this happening makes me sick.

The argument that commercial fishermen need jobs and have families to support therefore they should not be criticised for some of the despicable practices they employ and their constant fight against recommended quotas does not wash with me. The unregulated actions of many commercials may quickly lead to the EXTINCTION of a number of species it is that serious. We wring our hands about the logging industry destroying rainforests, get all teary and up in arms about poaching endangered species for Bush Meet but when it comes to the fish our seas it's too often - they got families to feed, it's a way of life etc. I am not suggesting for one second that commercial fishermen should be left to starve but get really peed off when they assume they can continue to pillage our seas.

I agree Charlie, some, not all, some fisherman are only there to make money and if they sweep the sea clear of one species they will switch to another, owt to make money.
They don't give a toss, what the answer is i don't know, but fishermen will have to be forced to take the actions,be it nets, shorter seasons or whatever.
They will never do it without the law forcing them and that law being enforced.
I have seen and have been offered undersize fish from shrimp boats at Blyth Dun Cow quay when they were unloading,i was simply sitting in my car and was approached.
Not saying all the boats do it but it didn't raise eye brows among the other crews standing around chatting.

instead of quotas, why not the goverment let the boats {trawlers}fish 3 days of the week in the north sea, goes for all boats that fish our waters, what ever they catch as long as legal size limit, they land then the other 4 days out of the week the the boat sits in the dock,at least the fish they are throwing back now when there quotas are reach wont be getting dumped, and trawlermen can still make a deacent wage for what they do...would this not work better than the system they got running now???

I could see that then turning into a deadliest catch kind of fishing with 20+ hour shifts none stop for 3 days. They could damage the seas just as much doing that. I think all boats should be fitted with fully operational CCTV as with most other walks of life. I'm sure they would do what they were supposed to do then. I think a lot of this carnage could be avoided and is not done so as it's too much hastle to them when their thoughts are on catching what they set out to

alright then when i say 3 days a week, your allowed 3 days fishing a week, maximum 2 hauls a day, shoot the net then your allowed to trawl a max of 6 hours each trawl,so that means max 12 hours fishing a day then back to port, what they catch that is in size gets weighed in and they get payed for.

to keep there records up to date, put somthing like a tacograph or somthing like that on the winch {as the winch is a must have for trawling}then they know when the net was shot and when it was hauled,or somewhere like that, then if there tacograph aint up to date a very heavy fine is given {if caught trying to fiddle with it to get a extra bit of trawl time} if you know what i mean

sounds like it would work to me

That sounds a lot better but heavier policing may be the way forward even if something like this was introduced. I've seen buckets full of flatties just floating around newbiggin bay which were dumped by boats. If a boat has fulfilled it's quota why doesn't it stop fishing?

Because the main quota is for cod ,whiting and haddock, which still means the boats can fish for other species. For under 10 metre vessels there is a 2 ton per month quota on prawns.
If boats reach there quota they can also buy portions of another boats quota.
