  • Lost a big one

Back for a couple hours fish at Howick area
Car park just before cullernose point fished the flat rock down from the lay by (can't remember the name)
Prepared some bait last week with what I had left over
Razor fish, squid, mussel, black lug, & peeler all on the same hook
Bout 2 hour before bottom & had the bite of a lifetime big thud then almost took the rod into the sea......... Anyway fish kept diving down & I struggled to keep it out the kelp beds, sonik rod was struggling & I mean struggling, then I saw the fish & no fishing tale it was a f*****g monster definately the biggest Iv seen my mate went to get it & cudnt get a hold
& off it popped to hunt for another day, GUTTED!!!
I'm guessing it was high double figure
At least 3 foot with a bigger head than a Rottweiler

So anyone with a spare couple of hours get up there & get it so I can find out its exact weight!
This area has done me proud over the last month, definately worth a visit

I know it was my mistake should have just pulled it up into the rock first....... All part of the experience

I told my mate to leave it but it all happened too quick. Unlike his walk home!!!!! Only kidding. I was tempted though

Tbh I would have put it back anyway
Fish that size deserve to be in the sea.
I bet it's got a sore lip now though!

Yes that's the mark, has a gully on the right side of where I fished, had a 9 pounder bout 3 week ago from exact same place
But was full of worms I wish I'd put it back as no-one ate it apart from the dog, I told the family it was like eating 2 meals at once

Must admit the amount that I picked out alive was off putting, then once cooked they were bright pink they must have been eating the cod alive. Probably was over 10lb before they started feasting on it

aye most of the fish in that area that I have caught have those ring type worms the kelpies you catch in the summer months are riddled with them
