Doubt you will get places to dig mate from the lads here as most are quite secretive about it.
Beaches will depend on what your trying to catch. The beach at marsden etc can throw up codling, coalfish and flatties. The big beach will kick out whiting flatties and the occasional bass along with coalfish. The small beach between the pier ad groyne will also kick out fish... If you google South Shields pier fishing marks there are a few good links which will give you the right times of tide etc to fish. I'm guessing without transport though your limited to between the groyne And marsden beach but plenty of spots to keep you occupied and in a few places you can fish into the beach from rocks etc so you won't need the waders!!"In order to becomes old and wise, first you must be young and stupid."

As previously posted marsden beach is one of your options and the whole length of it can be varied ground ranging from rough to easy and clean and various marks will throw out some decent fish.
As for digging bait, the beach behind latimers at Whitburn will give you enough lugworm for a session but it's hard work and better on a bigger tide. You can also fish here too when its too rough to fish elsewhere.
All of these places can be accessed by public transport the E1 and E2 go along the coast Road and there are plenty of buses that go to the marsden Inn and the beach is an easy walk down the bank, killer on the way back up though! Where in shields are you based?

Tides are crap at the moment you will be struggling to get many worm even if you stay for 2 tides.
Metro to shields then buses to beach, no 12 to the nook then bus to marsden inn or Whitburn/ Sunderland. I remember walking to and from marsden beach with all my gear from the nook, it would give me a coronary now!
