I've tried here a few times lately, especially when I've turned up at Hendon Prom only to find the waves and the wind too dangerous for the mark.
Just down from the fish quay there's a few boats moored. Remember that their mooring rope is a lot longer underwater and cast well clear of them.
I've only lost a single lead here and I think that was on a mooring rope.
Whities are the main target, or at least the main species you'll catch here.
There's an odd codling pulled out from time to time but it's less productive than the piers or beach for them.
I deliberately take 2 rods. One with whitie size hooks and bait an another with larger rigs and bait to try for the odd good size cod.
Last time I did this, last Sunday, I put a full bluey less head on a pennel rig.
When I hauled it at the end of the session all there was the skelton hanging on the hooks.
Nearly hissed myself laughing.
Damn crabs.
The mark is great for sitting in your car at the riverside. It's sheltered well enough and away from casual toss-heads disturbing you. There's even a seat at the far end.
If you go slightly up-river from there you can fish more or less under the Wear Bridge which is equally as nice for convenience. It's called Pann Banks. Just Google map it. The water's deep there too as the river narrows for the bridge.Told the missus I was going on a diet. I'd only eat what I caught

Try a bit further up the river to just under the bridge ,you can fish out the back of a car there and if its a southerly wind you are well protected. I also fish two rods ,one set up for whities and the other with bigger hooks and a bigger bait.Ladt time down there it wad a cod a cast although mainly less than 6 inches but did get one for 1.5lb.
