  • butchers tape.

Anyone use butchers tape permanently on there rod rings? How long does it last, and do you get any rings twisting around the blank?
    Cheers for any input.

Never tried it on a sea rod mate, but we used to sometimes use electricians insulating tape on coarse fishing rods and it was no bother so long as it was dead tight and the blank was clean and dry first.

must of been using butchers tape or as called on ebay for about 15yrs or more.if i want a rebuildt i just take tape of and retape using a diff colour if you want lol.

i have had fish to about 9lb using the tape with me been a tight git it saves me money to buy even more rods lol.

if i was fishing piers and cliff tops think i would prefer a proper buildt but for mixed ground and beach fishing it is spot on .and if you prefer to use larger rings for f spool its easy to take multiplier ringing off and put larger rings on.

it takes me about half an hr to tape a rod up just make sure you keep stretching tape as you are taping it on,i also put a bit tape under ring foot before taping .

they pretty much stay put i pendulum 8 ounces at times and rings never move so must be on tight.
did you know panel pins comes in diff sizes ?

You can also use good old Sellotape.
I used a variation of the butchers tape method to rebuild one of my old ABU 484's. I carefully removed all of the old corroded broken rings without damaging the original whippings, being carefull to remove pull the remains of the foot out of the whipping. Then I revarnished the whippings with many coats of clear nail varnish to make it look original and neat (but without any rings at this stage !). The varnished whippings then make a good surface for the ring to sit on.
Then I carefully aligned the new rings and taped with 'Selloclear' water clear sellotape around 4 times around each ring foot. With the tape carefully tenisoned and firmed down the rod looks almost original until you look closely and see that the ring feet are on the outside of the whippings. Using the water clear selloptape means that you can hardly see the tape so the rod looks good. You do get some inevitable lines in the tape as you tension it but you can hardly see them.
The rings are strong and do not move at all. Definitely recommended for quick rod repairs or rebuilding an old rod which is not worth spending lots of money on
