We caught a fair few at Alnmouth off the beach, they were lovely. A few days later the beach was packed so we tried up river to a spot we had been told about. Caught another few and they were rotten!

I have caught a few huge flounders in the river over 2lb but have never kept them as I tried them years ago and they tasted like Duckhams 20/50. I have heard that if they are from the beaches they are OK but I don't feel brave enough to try. I will stick to Dabs, they taste just as nice from the river as from the open sea.

River Flounder are pretty much the worst fish you can eat though apparently flounder from the beaches are far better, personally I prefer to return the lot gives a bit sport for all during the quiet times ..

Flounders from the river or the beach taste the same, fekking horrible.
If you want to cook them,do it the Rex Hunt way.
Get a big pan that will hold a couple of gallon of water.Bring to the boil then add the Flounder and a brick.
Boil for at least 3 hours till the Flounder is totally gone then, "eat the brick".....

Theres not a lot of difference in the taste between Flounders and Plaice..
Dabs are a lot better and theres nowt beats Sole.....

Everyone's different, like. Whiting is ok, in my view..
I kept a few decent flounders from the open sand at Embleton last year - filleted, skinned, dipped in egg and flour and fried fast in butter... absolutely superb.
                            PBs...Cod 8lb2oz.. Turbot 3lb2oz.. Whiting 1lb8oz.. Coalie 1lb9oz.. Flounder 1lb7oz.. Dab 15oz.. Plaice 13oz.. Bass 1lb 6oz

Beach caught flounder are lovely cut into strips and deep fried with tempura batter , river flounders tend to be a bit muddy tasting , but soaking the fillets in milk can get rid off the soilly taste , whiting are sweet if cooked properly :-)
