  • Bass - mystical beast?

After a few heated threads about Bass on here recently...it get's you wondering is Bass really the Holy Grail of Sea Angling?

Is it the best tasting fish ever?

Does it justify it's £15 a gram price ticket?

Does it fight the best fight ever?

Why is it such a coveted and sought after species?
    Ooh a new vid!

No1's Got to be winter cod fishing for me. Not far away now either. I've had bass of 2 1/2 lb and they scrap well, but I don't think the big fish are around in enough numbers up here to target them as the number 1 species.

I think they're so wanted because they're so bloody hard to find or catch (in my case they are anyway). Cod gishing is without doubt my priority and passion but these bass have stayed away from my hook a little too long now. I have no ontention of keeping it and eating it anyway - just want to catch one and watch it swim away again - and my lass says fishing is pointless lol

1/ No, IMO probably ling in UK waters

2/ No, because it means people are tempted to keep undersized fish to eat, and a lot of people don't realise that they are undersize as they tend to compare them with the farmed bass they see in the supermarkets

3/ No, mullet on light tackle, the UK bonefish.

Personally I'd get more satisfaction from a shore caught doubler cod

Has the Bass thing not got a lot to do with how slow growing they are as well? Hence the pressure on the limited inshore populations.

My taste buds are shot to shoite from the tabs -I can no more tell the diferrence in taste from a chateau la Jodi Marsh / A Hee Haw he haw vin blanc de superb than a lovely bit of finger caught turbot versus farmed pollock on a stick. It all taste the sham to me once the awld salt, pepper and reggae reggae suace has done its business

Still cant say I have actually caught a bass, but I cant imagine they fight well on a standard NE beachcaster setup, but then again neither does a 2/3 lb cod.

In areas of the country where they grow to large sizes I am told they scarp very well.

Any fish can give a good account of itself if the tackle is suited to the size of the fish. I have seen 35lb skate landed in 5 minutes but the next fish on the same gear take over an hour when the tackle and the fish are evenly matched.

The one thing we have to be thankfull about is the people who started the campaigning for bigger bass got anglers recognised as stakeholders in the future of our seas which in the long term is going to help improve our sport.

As I understand it bass are not particularly threatened and it is more a case of maintaining our existing stock and getting larger fish that is being campaigned for. There are also calls for a golden mile as a direct result of the Bass campaign, which is something that would benifit us all.

I wish mackrel grew to 10lb

                              Cheers
