Is it a waste Wrasse in comps and opens?

What are peoples views about wrasse being weighed in in opens and club comps?

What happens to the fish after the weigh ins?

Do people eat them or are they just thrown out?

Seems a shame if they are not used as there isnt an abundance of the fish in our area and they are a great sport fish on float etc!

the club i belong to catch and release. i think is the only way to go.

We are the same you get 2lb regardless of size but not sure if it could work in opens! Think it needs addressing to allow the fish to breed and become more established in area.

after searching through the net i have come accross a few recipes for wrasse and they sound ok, i am a firm beleiver that what i catch and is a reasonable size i eat so if i was to catch a wrasse in a comp sized i would take it to eat. one of my favorites is fish stew with a mixture of fish and with most bony fish once cooked through the bones can be removed, if there are a few left you just have to pick them out. sorry its a bit long winded

The legal size for keeping Wrasse in 23cm (I checked ) take the head and tail off that and that's not a huge amount of fish. I've always treated Wrasse as a sport fish - good on light rods, and as you say with the float.

nobody is bothered about dogfish or even flounder when weighed in,so whats the difference with wrasse,fish is a fish when it boils down to comps and the difference between you winning or not. catch and release works in pegged matches but not a hope in a rover.

i dont fish comps often, and have never actualy fished a catch and release comp but how do you prove in the catch release that you have caught a fish? Also in opens, could you not put a fish in a bucket of water till the weigh in, weigh it in then go back to the sea and release it?

Can manage to keep the likes of flounders and other flatfish alive in water or wet sack but would struggle with wrasse.

Catch and realease matches are normally fished pegged so your normally beside someone.

The club im a member of is small and we dont fish for large amounts of money, someones word is therefore taken.

To be honest our winter season starts in mid september and theres only 1 or 2 wrasse caught normally so it doesnt make a great difference to final weight.

The summer league is normally fished in a confined boundry so theres normally a witness in those comps although if you were alone your word would be taken.

well this post is right up my street ' i can honestly say i've fished 6 club matches this summer up northumberland and eyemouth area and i have caught 4 wrasse which i returned and i've estimated i knocked about 8lb off my summer weight i had 1 fish which was about 4lb alone BUT i refuse to weigh fish ( wrasse) i won't take to the table myself or which i can fillet and know someone will eat.Back to the question i brought this up at a club meeting but it was dismissed on the grounds that a lot of fish weighed in especially during the summer included a lot of dead flounder and other species that you would not normaly keep if you were just having a pleasure chuck sad but true in club and open comps' i may be a hypocite becuase i've got no bad feelings knocking a 35cm codling over the head in a club match but would do all i could to release the fish if pleasure fishing. i've had a few beers and its hard to type what you actually feel so apologies if this reads like a load of shoite..

I think Wrasse should be catch and release if you dont intend keeping (point taken on dogs and flatties as well) them,with todays technology most people have camera phones or digi camera's so you could use that as proof or take your mates word for it,the argument is are you fishing for the money or for friendships and a hobby ? if its money then it will never work
I have heard of people eating them in fact when i was on a trip out of Seahouses a few years ago we caught quite a few and my mate took them for his neighbour to eat,to the best of my knowledge they are very bony

come on lads pegged matches measure and release, the angler on next peg measures and signs your card to verify fish caught. and why in rovers or opens can some one at the club in question have a word with a boat fisherman about using unwanted/dead fish for pot bait as this will save the other fish including all spieces mentioned being targeted for the pot bait. or is that to simple, this is why a license would work so people could give and use other ideas adopted around the country. but all people do is harp on about the how we can police it and it will never work. think about this the government will decide on a blanket ban on fishing cos then anyone fishing will be breaking the law(easy to police) and dont think they wont cos......... they'll never shut the pits or shipyards or scrap trawlers (brand new)and decimate a fishing industry its all or nowt with them, lets meet them halfway.
