  • Beginner looking for a little advice

    Hi folks and merry Christmas

Just looking for some advice really.

I am canny new to see fishing just started 4 - 5 months ago, but since I caught a 2.5lb bass on Creswell beach about a month ago I am hooked (pun intended)

The only other place I have fished is Amble pier.
Although I have watched my mate catch several I am still waiting for my first,
    (take home sized) Cod.

I have caught that 1 bass and loads of flatty’s, little cods etc

So I am planning my next trip on Dec 30th
at around 8am. Low tide is at 7am and I will fish till the tide turns at around
    2pm.

This is the first time I am going on my own and I am desperate to catch a
    good sized Cod.

I feel I will have more chance catching cod fishing from the rocks around the
private beach area (scars, Limpet Rocks etc)

I just need some advice in terms of:

    - will these marks be cut off at some point as the tide comes in?

    - It will prob be dark when I arrive & I have a rubbish torch but will it be safe

    climbing over rocks?

    - What bait would be best, I have only ever had Rag before (& I have never

    used bait elastic before)

    - Will I loose loads of tackle as I do not have a rough bottom type rig (just

standard flapper rigs with various size hooks.

    Thanks in advance

First of all welcome to the forum and well done on the Bass

I don't know the marks your talking about so i'll leave that to the lads who do but i wouldn't go out without a decent head torch, you can pick then up pretty cheep these days.

    Good luck and fish safe.
Happy to help, Keen to learn!

      Welcome ,
You'll be best going and watching local lads on different marks and asking questions , also watch there rigs and baits .
Lovely bass mate and tight lines , ps don't go by yourself at night and have a good lamp with a backup ....
      I am a fisherman !
It is not merely something that I do
It is who I am !
Fishing is not simply my escape.
It is where I am supposed to be.
It is not a place that I go
But a lifelong journey that I am taking
It is a passage that was shown to me and that I will continue to show others.
When you understand all of this you will then know me .
      And we will fish together

Welcome to nesa m8 if your fishing the private beach you will have the choice of the rock marks to your right or left 2 to the left I find its better at night with abit of sea on not so productive on the big tides as it shallows out on the right side you can get into deeper water on the bigger tides if you follow it down to bottom water you can fish seal rocks which can throw up some canny bags of cod like any rock mark give your self plenty of time to get off when the tide turns best fished with a pal .type of rig I use is a pulley rig Pennell 2 hook size 3/0 5/0 rotten bottom if needed baits rag blow lug black lug crab mussel razor squid .As beginner don't go on creswell carrs on your own the tide comes in behind you very fast and catches a lot of anglers out go with someone who knows the mark well and don't get your self one head light you need 2 always have aback up your safety comes first

considering the stage of the tide you are going to be fishing, i wouldn't even consider the limpet rocks, the tide might be too far in before you even start. even cresswell carrs, you'll only get an hour or so before you get cut off.
the beacons at the north end of newbiggin might be a better bet, you can fish all the way up to high tide without getting cut off, just move to the left as the tide floods. having said that, it depends on the wind and sea conditions, i wouldn't go there in a big northerly! it's too far ahead to know what it's going to be like. i normally just decide on the day.

Why not try white house sands and ul be safe from the tide cutting you off! Ud be better fishing with a decent headlamp not a torch! Why not pop in to the shop in amble and norma will keep u rite! Dont fish by urself on an incoming tide if uve never fished the mark before, stick to a beach mark itl be far safer! Tight lines and good luck

as had already been said m8 the tide will have turned 2 flood by 8am m8 & its only a 1.19mtre tide you would'nt get on the limpets not a place 2 b if on your own & not knowing the mark. you might get a few chucks off the carrs but again with u not knowing the mark i would just head 4 the end of the pipe & drop a big bait in the gully 2 your right. the rocks 2 the left as u go down the steps in p.v.b would b your best bet & move back as the tide floods or the little skeers in middle of the beach as they fish well on the turn of the flood with a bit sea on or flat, u will need rotton bottoms ect 4 any of the marks & u will loose gear but mostly thick kelp in middle of p.v.b.
ideally u want 2 b fishing 2 hours to bottom & 2 hours back from rockedges, its not 2 bad for u in daylight hours when starting out so u can get 2 know the marks better b4 u even think of hitting them in darkness m8 & as above a good headlight with a spare.
              best of luck m8.

Hi Fillet, some very good advice there mate from experienced lads. Go and have a chat with Norma or Tony at Amble Angling Centre for some more good advice, its what its all about. When I started out many moons ago, an old guy who was fishing next to on the pier at Shields said ' There's nowt like being down by the sea but NEVER turn your back on it' !!! Good advice that.

                    Cheers.

                    aa.
