      Hi phill,
I've had alot of success up at the back of Dunstanburgh Castle up Craster way.You are fishing in very deep water. If you ever visit the area fish close in with either sandeel, head hooked ragworm or frewsh/frozen crab float fished deep i would say 30 foot.Or start fishing the maximum depth, then keep altering your depth by 6 foot every drop until you find the fish.I have had some nice pollack to 7lb and cod to 6lb.Loads of coalies with the odd wrasse.Mackeral can be caught float fishing or spinning, try using an orange artificial sandeel fished running ledger style with a 3oz lead casting as far out as possible casting towards Embleton beach in a fan pattern to cover the ground.Ive had quite a few cod fishing this way.but you may have to sacrifice a few sandeels as it does pay to fish these deep. You'll feel your gear coming through the weed and this is when the cod jump on when they see the lure coming out the weed. Its really good fun, fishing with a light 10" uptider which seems to sort the better pollack out.Spinning rods seem to fold on you and the pollack normaly get you into the weed losing your fish and gear.I've lost some big pollack over the years snapping line like rotten cotton when me drag has been clamped tight DOH! But give it a go! How did you get on did you have any joy ...

I bought some floats with rigs made up. 5 pack made by shakespear for mackeral. Nice floats. Yet to catch out of worth on them.

I would fish with a medium sized fixed spool reel loaded with 15lb-18lb line i sometimes use 20lb when fishing close in and if i'm not fishing really deep i use a 25 ft rubbing leader of 40lb clear mono.I've had pollack snap line on the rocks this is a safe guard measure only. But it is a useful tip when fishing at depths of less then 25ft.The procedure for setting up the float is as follows. You need a sliding stop knot tied onto your line which will slide under pressure you use this to set your depth you can use light mono 6-8lb or power gum.I have used rubber bands but you tend to get 'frap ups' when casting. (Loads of line coming of the reel in coils from catching on the knot).Next you need a small bore bead which will not go over the knot and big enough to not go through the float (5mm) i would use a medium sized cigar float but depending on the conditions a larger one may suit if it is choppy. These vary in cocking weight from about 1oz - 2.5oz so the bigger the float more cocking weight.I use drilled bullets, you can buy a mould which casts two at a time.OK then slide on a buffer bead this is to protect your not which you'll be tying on a small swivel to this tie on a 2ft snood of 30lb clear line. Then a strong size 3/0 Mustad big eye hook.Bait should be either fresh mackeral strip cut to look like a sandeel, frozen sandeel, head hooked ragworm (slide one up the line and head hook a second worm.) Frozen or fresh peeler crab, this will catch you plenty coalies down the side. These may be small but they'll keep you amused, but you do get them to 2.5lb.I have had pollack to 7lb with crab.So it does pay to chop and change your bait Mackeral with a head hooked ragworm is a good alternative. If you want to have a go at catching codling close in but your hook has got to be hard on the bottom. So keep altering your depth until your float will 'not' cock then you know your at the bottom then come up a couple of foot. This is another method to try float fishing for cod.Or you can bottom fish for these with a beachcaster and heavy line 30lb-35lb with a rotton bottom rig.The ground isn't to bad i normaly take 6 leads with me and i always bring some home so don't think you have to carry a bucket load.If you need to know anything else just ask or if you have a spare place in the car i'll take you up and show you how its done eh....LOL!

This was one of the cod that i caught last summer spinning with orange artificial sandeels.(3lb 12oz) They seem to like orange for some reason as ive had coalies and codling on the orange and they will not look at any other colour ?? But don't be afraid to let the lure hit bottom, start a steady retrieve and don't stop if you get a take just keep reeling until you know the fish is hooked.

What setup did you use with the orange sandeel? did you use a sinker? thanks

Small tip if you use artifical eels like this one.

As you usually use the eel on a trace up to 6 ft long it is pretty easy to impale yourself during casting. Take the lure hook and wedge it into the sinker next to the wire loop. As soon as you cast it will be freed by the drag and your hat won't go into the water.

Yeah i use a 2-3oz lead with a small size 8 snap which is sliding on the line.Slide on a buffer bead and a 24 -30 inch snood with a small swivel at one end and the red gill/artificial eel or a frozen sandeel.Cast this out as far as possible and a steady retrieve its an excellent method for pollack plus the odd codling and coalies.

Hi Terry i seen a sea fishing vid with Alan Yates and he recommended that method. But i've never used my trace that long.At the most its 30 inchs long.If you use it any longer it normaly twists up your main line and stops the lure looking natural.
