Shakespeare XK 4000 Multipler

Hi All.
Has anyone got any info on the Shakespeare xk4000 multiplier reel? I am thinking of buying one as a starter reel having had a nightmare journey with an Okuma multipier that didnt have any brakes !. At least the xk4000 has centrifugal brakes so I might actually be able to cast with it after practice. Any info would be appreciated as I wish to buy this reel as a stepping stone to either a Penn or an Abu (which I cannot afford as yet !).

Hi,if you have the cash i would buy a penn,daiwa or abu now,most modern reels are quite forgiven,just go down to a secluded beach or playing field and get some practice,fill it with decent line and a shockleader a handfull of sinkers and bobs your uncle,once you get it sussed out you\'ll never look back.You will pay another 30 odd quid for the xk 4000 then you\'ll soon grow out of it and you\'ll spend another £70 to £100 on a decent reel.The Daiwa 7HT is a decent clean ground reel to start with,if your okuma is \"as new\" you might be able to trade it in somewhere local.

Agree with Alan, don\'t waste money on more reels when you want a decent one later. Look to buy a Penn or Abu second hand to see if that\'s what you want and then when you can afford it get a new one which you can either pair up or get a different one to suit different fishing styles. A Penn 525 will do clean beach as well as rougher stuff and should only be about £65 brand new if you shop around.

Having given this matter a lot of thought,I have decided to wait a few weeks until I can buy a mag elite.The initial problem was that the Okuma multiplier I bought wasnt fitted with any sort of braking system and this made casting just about impossible for me just having returned to sea angling following a break of ten years or so.I had always hankered after a 7000 type reel and thought that it would be better to buy a cheap multiplier first in order to learn the basic techniques when using such a reel but I can see the sense of what you both advise by buying a decent reel at the outset and not wasting valuable cash on something that will probably cause me more problems. I have no bother at all in casting with my fixed spool reel but I have always wanted a good multiplier.
