I have recently returned to fishing after many years (although I was never very successful at it). I have been fishing the Tyne estuary (north side) for the last month or so with minor results. Mainly flatties, a few undersized codling and something I couldn't identify all taken on a mixture of lug/rag/mussel. However, all my fishing was done a couple of hours either side of high water and I was wondering if this area was any good as a low water mark - it would have to be somewhere near the lifeboat station. Any advice would be great.

Low Water Marks - Tyne

hi m8, just going by my experiance but a few years back i used to fish the lifeboat/icehouse area quite a bit ,i realy used to like it there just the boating activity spoilt it for me, i can chuck a line out a fair way with bait and this does account for a lot if you want to catch codling at this area. low water at this mark was my favourite time without doubt,on the bigger tides you get less fishing time as the water pushes thro too hard a couple of hours up,small tides are best but i like the medium tides, i dont know why but i think the first of the flooding tide is the best at most marks for me anyway without doubt the mark we are talking about. unless you can chuck a fair way out here and hold out with grip leads you can expect high tackle losses here and not many fish, sometimes you have to put up with this if you just want to get out. best bait without doubt fresh crab followed by frozen till winter gets well under way.
hopefully someone else can chip in and give you therethoughts these are just mine but not far wrong good luck johndid you know panel pins comes in diff sizes ?

Hi John, thanks for the reply. Ice house area would be fine as would lifeboat station. Where abouts would be best to fish the lifeboat station area at low water? The little beach right next to it or more towards the middens? Do the tackle shops sell frozen peeler as live peelers is like rocking horse doings in the shops.

Some do - but I think most of them are storing them up for the winter months
Never fished North Shields at Low tide - would be interested to know what it would be like...be sure to let us know if you give it a goOoh a new vid!

hi m8, litle beach next to lifeboat not sure were you mean, but never mind i used to fish in front of icehouse antwere round there, little beach hats on the south shields side.the middens used to be good for plaice from here they are not quite as big from other areas round here but good fun ragworm on 1/0 viking hook go down at low water look to see were the rocks are so at high water cast as near to rocks as you dare been a while since i fished there so not sure if changed,as i said earlir ice house can be difficult at times as snaggy close in if you can chuck a long way out when bringing in your gear gets above snags, i have had coalies to three pound here great fighters but be warned it is,nt an easy place to fish.getting crab i/d tackle maybe its a case of asking around keeping your eyes open on the forums for potential sellars prob at the moment they will of gone off peeling at moment there will be some female crab about but will come back on in about three to four weeks.

I can give you a few places for low water.
The Black Middens themselves can fish at low tide. Its a bit of a hike and watch out for the water cutting you off.
The rocks on the south side of the Haven just follow the close to the waters egde witht he Haven sands just on your left , casting straight out towards the south pier.
Go towards the fish sheds from the ice store , the dock takes a slight dog leg to the right and some new concrete starts. The channel is a little closer there than the ice store.
Back of the old Neptune yard (I think it was) see picture. This allows you to fish the old slipway. Two channels one about 30 yards the other about 80 yards out. FRon North Shields drive along Howden road past the the club to the first mini roundabout take a left down Dock road past Dowse recovery. Keep going straight down Ballast Hill Rd. I park on the top of the bank and walk down the path and fish off the prom.
I hope some of these are new to you.

Terry, being a North Shields native I am aware of all the marks you mention. It's just my inexperience that makes me unaware of low water marks. I may give the middens or haven a bash soon. I won't let the tide cut me off as it would be somewhat embarrassing having to call the RNLI to rescue me seeing as I'm one of the crew

Another blank last night.
Tried to post this as a new thread, but for some reason I keep getting "you are not logged in page" even though I am!!
Anyway, I was talking to a bloke at Walker riverside the other day who had been fishing the Tyne estuary the two hours or so either side of high water the previous night. He was as far along the beach as you can get towards Knotts flats. He reckons the fish were going mad and they were reeling in flatties, coalies and the odd undersized codling. So, needless to say, I thought I'd give it a go.
21.45ish last night sees me and my 14 year old daughter arrive at the low lights car park. We are aware hat there is lots of rats in this area and last night was no different. However, these were the two legged charva species who had congregated at the east end of the car park right in front of where we wanted to fish. Anyway, seeing as they were revving their cars doing wheelspins and what have you, we thought better of it.
We set up on the little beach between the lifeboat station and Lloyds jetty. Second cast, daughter reeled in a sand eel which was returned safely. Next up I hooked a greedy crab by the belly. That will teach the cheeky get though it was unhooked and returned okay. There was nothing after this so about 23.30 I walked to the end of the beach to check on the charva situation. They were still there...do these lot have no homes to go to?
We drove along to the ice house and had a couple of chucks there and I reeled in another sand eel (returned). After about 20 minutes we decided to have one last look to see if the charvas had dispersed and we were in luck as they were all driving off (revving their saxos and 306's like a formula 1 car).
So just as high tide approached we finally got on the mark we wanted. Result = nowt. NOWT!!!!
What am I doing wrong? Or am I just unlucky that the fish all disappear when I go fishing
Baits used were a mixture of rag, lug and mussel. We nearly had some frozen peeler from Frazers, but Tim overheard and informed the other guy all the peeler left in the freezer was for a certain book author. Thanks mate...I won't be buying any more copies of your book
Actually, speaking of the Codling Crouch it's a good read and we are going up to try at least one of the marks next week, but more on that later. In the meantime, can anyone suggest where I may be going wrong when fishing my local marks. I don't want my daughter to lose interest, but she might if we keep blanking all the time.
A bit long this post, so if you're still here thanks for reading this far and any advice will be appreciated.

Now then Mr. Gloves ,that's not a long post ,just simply a good one full of info . we like that on here ,the small beach you mentioned does throw out small codling and flatties although I've only ever fished there in the winter when the sea's massive and the river seems the only option ,flattie bashing isn't my thing to be honest but Newcastle Business Park seems to throw loads out in the summer I only know because my father in law has had up to ten in a few hours in the summer and as I mentioned it's not my thing but to keep your daughter interested it may well be worth a shot , as codnot mentions St. Peters basin is a canny mark as well ,easy access and well lit too ,great for starting kids off fishing .
Anyway good luck and I'm off on holiday tomorrow so sorry if I don't replyYou can take the lad out of Walker but .......

A few people have mentioned St Peters basin and I've seen folk fishing there before when I've been riding my bike up the Tyne cycle path, so may give it a bash sometime.
We had a few rag worms left over from the other night so we had a few chucks in the river at Walker/St Anthonys. A few knocks but nowt doing though we were only there an hour.
I have just finished reading the codling crouch and found it not just an entertaining read, but very informative as well. My daughter is looking through it at the minute and seeing the size of some of the fish in the photos she wants us to go. So, seeing as I'm off next Tuesday and Wednesday (the beauty of shift work ) we are Eyemouth bound providing I can lay my hands on some crab bait - frozen or fresh I'm not bothered. Crab seems pretty much a must to have any success up there although I will load the bait with mussel to make the crab go further. Now it's just a question of which mark to try as I don't want to put the bairn at risk for the sake of a few fish and some of them sound hellish to get onto.
Also in the book is mentioned some low water marks around Tynemouth longsands so we might give these a go as well.
